An action drama centered on a deadly racing tournament held every five years and the reckless dare-devil driver who wants to win it.
I saw this film in Adelaide as part of Madman Entertainment's 'Reel Anime' festival. Redline is directed by Takeshi Koike, who you might know as the animation director on such legendary anime films as Ninja Scroll & Wicked City, so you know what to expect lookwise. Lots of dark shading & fluid, really well choreographed action movement. Redline is no exception! An absolutely incredible amount of effects animation on display here. Explosions & really detailed mechanical carnage abound. Every shot of any character is just dripping with attitude too - very cool stuff...
I won't say too much about the story other than to say it is a fairly straightforward racing tale. Sort of follows the typical formula - racing, a bit of background stuff, then the BIG race... Fairly familiar in that regard, but the visual side of this film - the car designs, the architecture, the costumes - are really original & just plain cool! As I've said above, the animation is just awesome & the shot choices are just really dynamic & exciting to watch. A visual feast! You are definitely watching this film for the visuals more than the story... Sit back & soak it up!
I feel I have to point out - it does end abruptly & cheesily. It was quite a disappointment to me. There were a few groans in the cinema at the ending too... But it's forgivable considering how much fun the rest of the film is. You'll see what I mean!!! That basically sums up how I felt - if you love really visual anime & have a car fetish you'll get a real kick out of Redline! You'll forgive it's shortcomings because it goes above & beyond everywhere else!!! It's tough writing these things without giving too much away... Go see it!
