Storyline

Tired of dealing with the Hulk, Iron Man and his compatriots send the creature to an uninhabited planet, only for him to divert it to a savage populated one. Once there, the Hulk is enslaved as a gladiator for an evil ruler's games where no one expects him to survive. However, the Hulk's might proves everyone wrong to the point where some suspect he is the prophesied deliverer of that world. Although the Hulk does not care about such things, he still finds himself being a catalyst that could change the fate of the world. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)

Not as good as the book, but then again, what adaptation is?
29 January 2010 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Planet Hulk was a year long storyline in the Marvel comics Incredible Hulk series that saw the Hulk betrayed and tricked by the Illuminati, a group of Marvel superheros including Iron Man, Black Bolt, and Dr Strange, blasted into space, and sold into slavery. The story was a sci fi fantasy epic, with incredible writing and character development. It is one of the smartest superhero stories that I have ever read, and that's impressive, considering that it is a story that centers around a character whose dialogue generally used to consist of the words "Hulk," and "Smash," and little else. I never liked the Hulk until I read this book, and after having read it, he's one of my favorite Marvel characters.

Now when I heard that they were doing an animated, straight to DVD feature based on the book, I was elated. The big question now, is how does it measure up? With a resounding "Ehh." Planet Hulk (the movie) is a relatively faithful adaptation, but as it clocks in at only about an hour and fifteen minutes, things had to be changed and cut. No one particular change really bothered me all that much, and I understand a lot of the big ones (leaving out No-Name of the Brood, and swapping Silver Surfer for Beta Ray Bill), but the overall experience suffers from how short the movie is. It seems like with the time they were allotted they had to choose between plot and action, and they chose action. It felt very rushed, and most of the characters besides Hulk seemed almost arbitrary.

That being said, the animation style and the voice acting are top notch and all of the action is very well-done. I don't even dislike this movie, and it really is a fun ride, but I just found myself not caring about the characters nearly as much as I did in the book.

If you haven't read it, you'll enjoy the movie. So watch it, and THEN go read the book.
