Kevin Smith, self-distribution, and the future of cinema

25 July 2017 1:56 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Thomas Hetherington Aug 9, 2017

How Kevin Smith challenged the distribution model for cinema, and what happened next...

Kevin Smith’s career has taken some interesting turns over its three decades and counting. He’s criticised Bruce Willis, parted ways with the Weinsteins, sewn Justin Long into a Walrus suit, given us the spectacle of Johnny Depp with a penis shaped nose, and even picketed his own releases. And he did those last two things twice over. He’s one of the most unpredictable filmmakers working today, he’s made podcasting a filthily brilliant art form and his projects frequently reach fever dream levels of brilliance and bizarre. But possibly the most interesting occurrence in Smith’s career was the furore and fallout, or lack thereof, surrounding his 2011 release Red State.

After the critical mauling Smith received for his studio project Cop Out in 2010, he returned to his indie roots with the »

Project details nowhere to be found.

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail will direct a film about the infamous Bermuda Triangle for Universal Pictures.

Esmail will write the script from earlier drafts by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, and Juliet Snowden & Stiles White.

The Bermuda Triangle is a region over the Caribbean that earned notoriety several decades ago for press coverage about a number of planes and ships that reportedly went missing after travelling through the area.

Appropriately enough, Esmail, his fellow producers, and Universal are keeping plot details under wraps.

Dylan Clark (Planet Of The Apes series, Oblivion) will produce through his Universal-based Dylan Clark Productions, alongside Esmail and Chad Hamilton for Esmail Corp.  Millar and Gough will serve as executive producers

As previously announced, Esmail is lining up the Amazon Studios project Homecoming to star Julia Roberts.

Joseph Kosinski’s first two films, Tron: Legacy and Oblivion, lived in fantasy land. Both science-fiction movies showed what a precise eye he has, with smooth camerawork and stunning compositions. He’s crafted two lavish, visually appealing films, which, dramatically, sometimes leave more to be desired. The director is taking on more dramatic material with his next feature, Only the Brave, based on the […]

Beauty vs Beast: Who's The Maverick Now

3 July 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jason from Mnpp here - I think that most of us have mixed (to put it mildly) feelings about Tom Cruise, who is celebrating his 55th birthday today (yes, he was Born on the Third of July). But there's no arguing that his radar for Big Mainstream Action Movie Success has seemed fairly fine tuned for all of the four decades that he's been batting in the major leagues. Well... until The Mummy this summer, which more than just being a bad movie (he's had plenty of those) felt like an actively bad choice for him particularly. The role didn't fit him and he didn't manage to make it fit him by the sheer force of smiling will that his stardom's been so foundationally built upon.

So perhaps that why now he's finally stepping back into the role that made him a star in the first place, and asking us »

The film will feature the return of Tom Cruise as Maverick, who is now working as an experienced flight instructor for young pilots. It will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose previous directorial credits are frustratingly limited to “Oblivion” and “Tron: Legacy.” Tony Scott he is not.

Paramount Pictures has finally firmed up plans for the long-awaited Top Gun 2, setting Joseph Kosinski to direct, reuniting him with Oblivion star Tom Cruise, and announcing a July 12, 2019 release date. We first reported that Joseph Kosinski was being sought to direct this sequel last month, and now his deal has been finalized. While it hasn't been confirmed when filming will begin, a previous report claimed the sequel will start filming next year, which may be accurate given this new release date.

Deadline broke the news about this sequel today, although it didn't confirm a previous report regarding the title. Earlier this month, while promoting The Mummy, Tom Cruise teased that that this Top Gun sequel will be called Top Gun: Maverick, because he "didn't want a number" in the title. This report did reveal, though, that the story will follow Maverick, who is now a flight instructor, "teaching the young »
