Young Beanie is unpacking his suitcase in his bedroom as his mother, Meg, and Meg's sister, Vanessa, enter the room. Meg and her son continue their quarrel: Beanie is refusing to take the trip to the boarding school he had earlier wanted so badly to go to. He is angry with his mother and refuses to go anywhere with her. Vanessa hints that Meg should leave the room. When Van and Beanie are alone, she gets him to tell her why he is mad at his mother. It seems that Meg was saying bad things about Van to Matt Slocum. "She told Matt," says Beanie, "you don't care two cents about him." Van realizes this is the reason Beanie angrily declared to his mother later that Matt was trying to take him away from her. She gets him to admit that he only made that up. She also convinces him to agree to go to school with his mother. In fact, when Meg returns to the room, he demands she take him right away, but Meg stubbornly refuses to allow her son to dictate her actions. Later, Van is unable to ... Written by
