Despicable Me 3 Crosses $1 Billion at the Worldwide Box Office

8 September 2017 5:02 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While the summer box office season was the worst on record since 2006, there were a few bright spots in the mix, one of which was Universal and Illumination's animated sequel Despicable Me 3. While the movie is likely close to winding down its box office run, it did manage to cross an important box office milestone, reaching the coveted $1 billion worldwide mark earlier today. It became just the third movie this year to cross the milestone, and just the first to do so after being released during the summer movie season, which is yet another indication of how weak this summer truly was.

Deadline broke the news earlier today, with the Despicable Me sequel joining just Universal's The Fate of the Furious ($1.23 billion) and the year's top grossing movie domestically and worldwide, Beauty and the Beast ($1.26 billion). Despite having strong showings, even hits like Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 »

Interview, Audio: Actress Jenny Slate Answers the Call in ‘Landline’

30 July 2017 5:49 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Chicago – Jenny Slate keeps getting more high profile, both in voiceover work (“The Secret Life of Pets”) and as an actress. Her latest film is “Landline,” her second with director Gillian Robespierre. In the film, Slate portrays an engaged-to-be-married “adult” who is having trouble coming to terms with her life.

Landline” is set in 1990s New York City, just before the tech/mobile phone boom and the loss of grit in the Big Apple. Based on the growing-up experiences of Gillian Robespierre and co-writer Elisabeth Holm, the story is about transitions… Slate’s character to adulthood, the last days of being a teenager for her sister Ali (Abby Quinn) and the dissolution of their parent’s marriage (as portrayed by Edie Falco and John Turturro). It has a bit of a “slamming doors” edge to it, as misunderstandings and family connections blend into a very human story. Slate and Robespierre »

First Look at Benedict Cumberbatch's The Grinch

18 May 2017 4:50 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It's been over a year since Benedict Cumberbatch was confirmed to be voicing the title role in Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, a feature length animated reboot of the classic holiday tale. Today, we get a first look at the grumpy green Grinch intent on taking over Christmas. And word that the title has been greatly reduced to just two short words, better for fitting on a marquee.

Now simply called The Grinch, this first look at the CG-animated family holiday comedy comes courtesy of License Global magazine via Coming Soon. The movie will be directed by Peter Candeland and Yarrow Cheney and now has a release date of November 9, 2018. The tag line simply reads as such.

"Stealing Christmas 2018."

Jim Carrey starred in the original live-action movie adaptation of The Grinch way back in 2000, with the new take coming 18 years after the comedian nearly walked off the set »

How ‘The Boss Baby’ Became Top Dog at the Box Office

3 April 2017 11:30 AM, PDT | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Release dates are sometimes more interesting than their movies.

March is a tricky month for movie releases. With Easter having an unfixed date falling either in March or April, there’s sometimes a holiday weekend, albeit not one typically known for moviegoing. Also, much of America’s children have a spring break, yet there’s no uniformity from county to county within any given state let alone across the country (many states and school districts also wait until April »
