The character of Nicky, the ghost played by Lindsay Garrallo was originally to be played by Charli Henley. She was conceptually inspired by the character "Oiwa-san" in the Japanese folktale Yotsuya Kaidan, one of J.L. Carrozza's favorite stories. In the story, originally performed as a Kabuki play, Oiwa was a woman whose treacherous husband poisoned and disfigured her so he could marry the younger daughter of a Lord to gain employment and status. On the night of Iuemon's wedding, Oiwa returns in spectral form and drives her former husband mad. The story has been filmed by numerous filmmakers in Japan from Nobuo Nakagawa to Kenji Misumi to Kinji Fukasaku and Carrozza has always had interest in a version of the story as well. See more »
