Sometimes, humans are the real monsters
1 December 2015 | by (Peru) – See all my reviews

"The Terrible Thing of Alpha-9!" is a neat animated short which has an interesting subversion of your typical "space monster" science fiction stories: Here the "monster" is nothing more than a weird but friendly creature, while on the other side the human character (which in a more conventional story would have been an heroic/survivor figure) has an antagonistic role that in a way evokes the villains of those classic slapstick cartoons featuring talking animals as the main characters.

The plot can be easily seen as metaphor of the inherent violence of our human nature, always fearing and wanting to eliminate what we are not able to understand to the point of obsession.

There's a somewhat dark "twist" at the end of the short, but is not the kind of twist one would normally expect, resulting in a ironically sinister yet satisfying conclusion.

8/10
