Some scenes work some don't. 8

Warning: Spoilers
Look, I've been a huge fan of the books for about twenty two years, however I'm not naive and appreciate that it's impossible to translate such long books to the screen in a short number of episodes. I also understand that some book scenes are hard to recreate for the screen. Having said that I'm pretty annoyed that they decided to make the birth scene with Fergus and Marsali into something sleazy. It was not! Fergus only did something, which he knew from being a child in a brothel, was helpful during a long birth, then eventually they decided to try intercourse to try and move it further along, which thankfully worked. Childbirth was scary in those days and Marsali was genuinely afraid of death. Only Jamie and Claire were in an adjoining room, and at one stage Ian for a few seconds. In the book I found that childbirth part interesting and informative. The other scene which misfired was one that was both hilarious and eventually sad in the book. The resurrection of Granny Wilson. That was a real belly chuckle book moment for me. Granny Wilson deserved more screen time. They could have extended that to it full effect and left out the sleazy intercourse part, which definitely did not translate well to screen.

I think Roger's character hopefully may becoming less um, diminished? Again I am a fan of book Roger, but so far, he has seemed a washed out character, (no fault of the actor). Never mind that Roger was very tall and handsome with glossy black hair and green eyes. His presence has been lost. I always saw Roger and Brianna as a tall striking looking power couple standing together.

Young Ian now, for me in this episode I finally started to see book Ian. The depth he gives his lines about little Henri-Christian, all of a sudden there was Ian rising from the pages. Book Ian is a wonderful character and I have adored how his character has progressed from a teenager through to the latest book.

Looking forward to the Christie story this season. So far so good. Also, fingers crossed for the reappearance of the 9th Earl of Ellesmore.

Whilst I have a few grumps, still a solid 8 overall.

a good enough episode

Warning: Spoilers
Nothing sparkled or sparked on this episode but it had some decent detail in it.

I liked the contemplation of how their actions impact a future they know will happen, regarding arming the Native Americans. I haven't seen a story angle where they tried to change it the course of history from a known outcome yet, but that may not be in the books. It's an interesting angle.

I don't like the junkie Claire angle which is apparently not in the books. It's not a story we need to have with so many other interesting angles to explore.

Not really caring for the new theme tune, it's ok, and better than last series one, but still not as captivating as the first one.

It would have been great to see Claire do a C section, or describe why she felt she couldn't have done it, but instead we got a kinda creepy pre delivery sex scene, which was a bit weird and a nod back to the cheesy mills and boone bodice ripper stuff. I can tolerate it but it's not really what I'm watching for. The characters and the situation set up is what I'm here for. Fingers crossed we can keep to that. I loved the care and attention the show runners put into it last season and I liked their post show breakdown of the episodes which demonstrated how much thought and care they put into each episode. They don't appear to be screening with this series.

Used to be a 9
doug2go18 March 2022
Outlander has been a 9 or 10 for years in our Household - save the ill advised diversion to France - we have been glued to the TV set when it was on - until now. Something is missing for us and I think it is the Mystery and Fantasy attached to the show from the beginning - We now have an aging married couple in a period piece soap opera - to us it is still more than worth watching but just not as compelling as it has been in the past . When I write a review that is somewhat critical - I usually have a suggestion - unfortunately my only thought now is that perhaps this great series has run its course.

Excellent episode with great build up!
elliottremblay15 March 2022
Excellent episode! The acting is amazingly amazing from Marsali and especially from Malva. Everything is preparing for what is to come. As a reader of all the books in the series, I'm pretty happy to see what liberties they take and which they don't. I'm also sick of people saying it's not the same as the first seasons. I have an answer to that: take a look at all the best TV shows that have been made, it changes, it evolves, if it stays the same it gets boring and it goes in circles. The characters around Claire and Jamie are also evolving, so it's fitting that they aren't as much a part of the central plot as they used to be. They were the start of this huge story and now they are part of it, as they should be. At this stage, the season is excellent!

You gotta luv shiny Preacher Roger. The best part of episode 2!
FrankensteinBarbie15 March 2022
Roger has shown himself in his past to be a great captain and the best farmer. Now he shines with the Lord's light as His servant Preacher Roger and I luv him for it. His humble boots don't need no shining but he will polish them anyway cuz that's the man that he is. Prayers cured his hunchback so now he stands up straight and proud while he does his eulogies!

Warning: Spoilers
Usually I don't write reviews under episodes, I just rate them. This time I had to though. Everything in this episode was brilliant.

From Roger having his first moment as a minister, to Ian's reveal about his child when he was with the Mohawk, and Jamie overhearing it and thus forwarding their cause to the Governor out of his love for Ian.

The Christies being principal troublemakers is also another thing which has been perfectly showcased this episode. From Allan's chilling words to Claire about Malva not being able to join her, to Tom's abuse of Malva, and Malva's devilish but understandable reaction when she escaped her father's awful punishment.

But obviously the most heartwarming moment of the episode (and heartbreaking) was Marsali's birth, and the extremely romantic moment she shared with Fergus right before giving birth. Fergus unknowingly may have saved her life there, by doing, you know what. It shows he still obviously cares and loves her madly, but his past came back to severely haunt him now and he's on a rather bad drinking stage. But I'm sure he'll overcome it. He needs to be there to protect Marsali and his family.

So overall, it was a superb episode. I loved it way more than the previous one, which also wasn't bad at all by any means. If this season keeps delivering episodes like this one for the rest of its run, I might not even be so disapponted anymore we're only having 8 of them.

KEZZIE!!
kimkimtim14 March 2022
Kezzie my love is back! How my heart has ached for him! I never lost hope. I knew he'd return, my sweet boy.

The former pantless servant has blossomed into such a respectable young man. Kezzie would never get drunk and have sex in front of other people like an animal.

I'll gladly endure every episode of Outlander if there's even the slightest chance of catching a glimpse of my sweet Kezzie's face!

Who is that old woman who died and why should we care? Why is Roger now a preacher? Give us adventure and excitement instead of boredom and irritation.

The Christie's are an interesting family. Not friendly. Claire is trying to be a guide to Malva. Fergus is dealing with guilt from the S5 finale. Roger is stepping up!

This show continues to be strong. They don't need a lot of action, they just handle their business and hit hard when it needs to like with the reveal of the dwarf at the end.

Borefest!
alisonb1234515 March 2022
This new series so far is absolutely boring and not a patch on the previous series.. also, Jamie and Claire's wigs are not good. Their hairlines are so bad. Hope the rest of the series picks up.

Boring
Anna_160013 March 2022
Twenty-three minutes into episode 2, I'm bored. Outander now has too many scenes with children and babies. Too much pregnancy stuff. Nothing interesting or exciting. Jamie's interaction with the Native American women wasn't very funny. I don't mind slow-paced shows when the dialogue is interesting, but here it's not. Too much of the same old.

I only read the first three books, so I don't know where the story is going. Too bad Claire and Jamie aren't back in Scotland or living in an exciting European city. Fraser's Ridge with all the family, chores, and child rearing just isn't much fun.

An Ode to the Books
gcspptffq14 March 2022
I think my qualms with these first two episodes are with the editing, perhaps since this is a new director on the series? I found the editing choppy, we'd get the scene, it would fade to black at a weird spot, we'd get two filler shots of the scenery, and onto the next scene.

That said, lots of dialogue and moments in this episode are direct from the books. Outlander is now in this weird place where they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. When they strayed, people were outraged. When they stay true, people are bored. The strength of this show was always in the action and in Claire and Jamie's love story. Right now we don't really have a ton of either going on, so we'll have to see how it plays out. I am curious if my outlook will change with a different director behind the camera.

I'm sorry what?

I never experienced labor, but I'm pretty sure the last thing a woman needs at that time is to have sex.

Especially with a man that smells of alcohol.

Just NO!

Just what have they done?!?
spinalremains8013 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What did you guys do to the writers? Are they being held hostage somewhere? You have made Roger so cringeworthy in his scenes. The actor deserves better. I found myself constantly skipping just to get to the end. It's unfortunate you guys chose the Games Of Thrones exit strategy. Four stars for the effort.

Fergus and Marsali eew
happysmileyface17 March 2022
That pre-birth sex scene was just gross. And to make it worse, they started in front of Claire and then were heard by others in the next room. I fast forwarded through most of it. What the heck were the writers thinking?

Babies are made in your stomach
sja-awesome16 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
One of the stupidest episodes of any TV show I've seen in awhile, not to mention disgusting! You know a show is bad when they have to make up utter nonsense drama that goes nowhere and then they add in pointless disgusting irrelevant sex scenes over and over. Ha ha it's so funny! The show used to be about love and romance and the reality of those things. They just bastardize it and destroy the characters! It's so upsetting to see Fergus and marsley destroy each other and then the producers try to force them together, it's so disgusting! That's not love. And if Claire is having nightmares those don't go away when you ether yourself.. They would most likely get more intense. Btw did you know that babies are made in the stomach as Claire said?

Why so much sex.
fthomas-2311024 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 2 and already 3 different sex scenes. We all know how boring the story is, but simulated sex is not the answer. Do the producers and directors think the viewers are as shallow as they are. Then we have Bri making matches, and forgetting the penchant for 18th century Puritans to burn suspected witches. If there is something that looks more like witchcraft than striking a match. Of course, we must not forget Claire, with her amazing conceit that she should be considered as good as any man in 18th century America, or that her (unlikely) distillation of medical ether, and her casual assertion it would send the patient into a deep sleep where they would feel no pain. Wow, even the most scientific amongst them would scream, "burn the witch!" .

The biggest problem was the boring, prosaic story lines. Where is the magic of the standing stones, the potential to contrast the two time periods, the effect her being in the past must affect future events. Instead we get a third rate period drama. Writers, please get a grip on this season. I would call it s***, but it's not that good!
