A man who confessed to murder while Brenda was away on her honeymoon gets details of the crime wrong during his allocution, causing Brenda to reopen the case. Her first thought is that he is trying to cover for his schizophrenic son, whose doctor was the victim. James Duff, the producer of the series, saw Sosie Bacon, daughter of Kyra Sedgwick, perform in Loverboy. He was impressed and wanted to write Bacon into the series; however, Sedgwick was opposed to the idea, insistent on her daughter not getting involved with acting. Eventually Duff says he was able to get Sedgwick to agree to Bacon having a brief role provided it did not interfere with her education. Bacon portrayed Brenda Johnson's niece Charlie for four episodes, which led to what Sedgwick said was one of the hardest scenes for her on the show, where Brenda is telling Charlie that she has to go home with Charlie responding by asking "Do you not want me to stay?"
