- The eight women compete in the salsa and Viennese waltz, then face off in cha cha cha and foxtrot relays.
- The women took to the dance floor for the first time in the ninth season of "Dancing with the Stars" on Tuesday night. They had to learn two dances, a ballroom and a Latin dance, performing one individually and one in a relay format.
Wednesday night's results show will see two stars, a man and a woman, sent home.
Let's get to the action:
Debi & Maks: Actress Debi Mazar admitted to her past in dancing on TV, on a show called "Graffiti Rock." Yes, there was a clip. Debi said she wasn't scared of her "bad boy" partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She talked a bit too much for Maks' taste in rehearsal, but they worked through their differences. Debi had a couple of rough patches during their salsa, and the judges noticed. Judge Len Goodman said it was all about the hips, and they were missing because Debi's feet were flat. But he said she was full of energy and potential, yet there was work to do. Bruno Tonioli said Debi could work her "bozooom" like nobody else. He gave her some footwork tips and said her timing was "all over the place," but he hoped she'd stay in the competition. Carrie Ann Inaba said it's tougher on the girls to shine, but Debi lacked the connection from her character to the moves.Scores: 6, 5, and 5. Total: 16
Melissa & Mark: Actress Melissa Joan Hart wanted to show folks that she's "not a teenager anymore." The mother of two was partnered up with a self-proclaimed "big fan" of her show "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." She struggled in rehearsals with her posture on the Viennese Waltz. The audience loved it. Bruno noticed that Melissa was "a little bit" nervous, but said her dance was prim, proper, adequate but she didn't quite perform to the level he thought she could. Carrie Ann praised Melissa for creating "some moments" in the dance, but that she was a bit choppy overall. Len said the whole thing was a bit "sweet and sickly" and he couldn't stand it. He said she kept her hold well and she created good movement, but there was "lots of poor footwork." Scores: 6, 6, and 6. Total: 18
Mya & Dmitry: R&B singer Mya said her greatest achievement in music was her breakout hit "Case of the Ex," and she was excited to be paired with Dmitry Chaplin. She quickly discovered that her bit of dancing background might not carry her through this competition. They danced the Viennese Waltz. She received what might have been the first standing ovation of the season. Carrie Ann said Mya "set the bar" and called it "beautiful." Len said they only did three bars in hold, and he didn't like them. "This was not a Viennese Waltz, it was a theatrical hodgepodge," he said. Bruno shouted him down, calling it "artistry in motion; the girl was magnificent." He went on to say Mya's dance was where the show started. Len clarified that he thought Mya was "a fantastic dancer," then pointed at Dmitry, saying, "you have let her down by not giving her a proper Viennese Waltz." Scores: 8, 5, and 8. Total: 21
Kathy & Tony: Former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model turned CEO Kathy Ireland was paired with Tony Dovolani. Kathy said some people assume a model would be coordinated, but recalled getting kicked out of an aerobics class and being asked to never come back. She took on the salsa. Len said the dance was "far too careful." Bruno said Kathy didn't sell the salsa because there was no hip action or sex. "With no sex, it doesn't work," he said. Carrie Ann added on to the tight hips discussion, telling Kathy she needed to work on loosening up. Scores: 6, 5, and 5. Total: 16
Natalie & Alec: Swimming champion Natalie Coughlin took home six medals at the Beijing Olympics, but is there a mirror ball trophy in her future? Alec Mazo, who won the show's first season, tried to help Natalie overcome her fear of dancing in front of the crowd, but she was a definite fish out of water. Bruno called Natalie the million-dollar mermaid and she could one day make it on the dance floor. He said she sometimes froze and had trouble catching up, and she needed to work on that. Carrie Ann thought Natalie was a diamond in the rough. Len said the salsa was "sexy and steamy" and the girls weren't knocking his socks off. He didn't know what was wrong, and Carrie Ann suggested it was that he was getting old. Scores: 7, 6, and 6. Total: 19
Macy & Jonathan: Singer-songwriter Macy Gray said she decided to do the show because her mom was excited about the opportunity. Her partner Jonathan Roberts was ready to "work overtime" to avoid getting knocked out early again. Macy didn't really understand the Viennese Waltz at first, and Jonathan struggled to get over her eccentricities. It didn't help that she was touring Europe, forcing the couple to practice in places like Holland, Germany and Sweden before returning to L.A. Carrie Ann called it "fascinating," but she couldn't even go there on Macy's technique, saying "it was beautiful in its own bizarre way." Len agreed, saying there was a vulnerability and charm to Macy's dancing, and said, "If I was at home, I'd be voting for you." Bruno said she was endearing and it was like watching a child taking his first step. "Now you've got to start work on technique," he said. Backstage, Macy said she was so glad to get the first dance out of the way, saying, "I just feel like I busted my cherry," which was bleeped. Carrie Ann couldn't contain her laughter as she held up her scoring paddle. Scores: 6, 4, and 5. Total: 14
Joanna & Derek: Maxim cover girl Joanna Krupa said she had to quit dancing lessons as a child because her family couldn't afford it, so being on the show was like a dream come true. Her partner Derek Hough offered to give her massages. He tried to get Joanna to let go and have fun. They took on the salsa. Len was the happiest he'd been all night, "because at last we've seen a hot, smoking salsa." Bruno said, "What a specimen," and called it hot and saucy and "what a salsa should be." Carrie Ann agreed, saying it was "hot" and praising Derek for his great choreography. Scores: 8, 8, and 8. Total: 24
Kelly & Louis: Kelly Osbourne wanted to prove she could be a lady by being on the show. Her partner Louis Van Amstel went to one of the most famous households on TV to meet her. Kelly's dad Ozzy answered the door and called out for his wife Sharon. Kelly was doubtful about her dancing prowess, but wanted to prove "this rocker's daughter has what it takes to be a lady." The audience gave her a well deserved standing ovation as her proud parents applauded and mom Sharon cried a bit. She ran over and gave her dad a big hug. Bruno said he could not believe his eyes at seeing her transformed into a "vision of grace." He said her waltz had impeccable style. Carrie Ann said her parents should be proud and "there were chills up and down my spine." Carrie Ann docked a point for the lift and Kelly said she tried so hard to keep her foot on the ground, but couldn't. Len kept it brief, saying, "It was the best Viennese Waltz of the night." Scores: 7, 8, and 8. Total: 23
The Foxtrot Relay: The first group of four couples hoped to impress the judges with their foxtrot. Natalie, Kathy, Joanna and Debi took to the floor.
Carrie Ann called Joanna lovely and elegant, Kathy looked like she was going to the Oscars, Natalie did excellent and Debi was "muffling" a little bit. Len said Natalie had beautiful extension, Kathy had to try and move a little more, Joanna was good in hold, and Debi did a lot in hold, opting not to go the easy route. Bruno said Natalie was much more at ease with the ballroom dance, Kathy was "very elegant," and said Joanna was "still smoking" and called Debi a great performer and suggested she control her energy.
The Foxtrot Relay Rankings:
Joanna & Derek: 10 points
Natalie & Alec: 8 points
Debi & Maks: 6 points
Kathy & Tony: 4 points
The Cha Cha Cha Relay: The second group of four couples got a second chance to please the judges with a cha cha cha relay. Macy, Melissa, Mya and Kelly took to the floor.
Len said Macy's busy schedule caught up with her, Melissa's cha cha cha was a higher level of performance than her first dance, Mya had great hips and there was "much more content" in their dance, and Kelly "produced, tonight, two first-class dances." Bruno said Macy had better timing, told Melissa "that's the way to go," Mya was hitting her footwork, and he still couldn't believe what he was seeing in Kelly. Carrie Ann suggested Macy work a little harder, Melissa was most improved, she called Mya fantastic and told Kelly she had fantastic legwork.

Kelly & Louis: 8 points
Melissa & Mark: 6 points
