Once the ruler of an entire universe, the Great Spirit Mata Nui finds himself cast out of his own body, his spirit trapped inside the fabled Mask of Life, hurtling through space. After landing on the far-away planet of Bara Magna, the mask creates a new body for Mata Nui, who unwillingly gets caught up in the furious battles of the nearly barren and dangerous planet. The novel accompanying the movie was written before the finalized script, and thus tells us what the movie makers originally had in mind for certain scenes. A couple of interesting things to note: Mata Nui was originally gold and white instead of gold and black, and when Click transformed into a shield, only one of his eyes remained, instead of his whole face, as we see in the movie. Some scenes are also described differently. For instance, the Vorox broke off its tail by smashing it into a rock, rather than into Mata Nui's shield. It is also worth noting that the book tells us why the characters behave the way they do (the otherwise grim Kiina is cheerful because she doesn't want Mata Nui to know how terrible their lives are, and some of the things she tells him are actually blatant lies), and that most of the slapstick comedy moments are also absent. Finally, the novel mentions Bionicle characters and places (like Certavus and Iconox) that are never spoken of in the movie, and also explains plot points better (like why the Glatorian all stay in the village of Tesara). There is an odd flickering color on the inside of Mata Nui's thigh when Kiina says "I want out of this dump." It looks like two overlapping surfaces in his animation model causing rendering errors. See more
