Storyline

1880's Meiji Japan. It is almost twenty years since the end of the Samurai Era in Japan, one time Tosa Clansman, successful business industrialist, mogul, & founder of Mitsubishi Corporation Iwasaki Yataro (played by Teruyuki Kagawa) is approached by a reporter to recount what he knew of the life of the Tosa Clansman, visionary reformer, & architect of Modern Japan, Sakamoto Ryoma (played by Masaharu Fukuyama). Almost instantly Iwasaki is incensed and overcome by rage & jealousy for throughout his life he had lived in the shadow of his famous beloved clansman. Upon reason, Iwasaki agrees to conduct the interview on the grounds that his recollection would not serve to glorify the memory of Sakamato Ryoma. His memories are painful and numerous which becomes the basis of this 2010 49th NHK Taiga Drama that will go back to the Pre-Bakumatsu period where Iwasaki first encounters a lanky young Kashii named Sakamoto Ryoma - a member of the Lower Caste Samurai of Tosa so named because they ... The journey of Ryoma and Yataro.
31 August 2015 | by See all my reviews

Before reading any review make sure you don't check who is Sakamoto Ryoma and Iwasaki Yataro unless you know them already. It might spoil everything and make the show less enjoyable.

The TV drama is based on Sakamoto Ryoma who wanted to change something very important. During his journey he meets many interesting people who help him to achieve his goals. Despite being a show focusing on Sakamoto Ryoma's life they also focus on Iwasaki Yataro and many other people which played a big role in the Japanese history during 19th century. I loved everything about this show except one episode which in my opinion wasn't handled right and can make the viewers very curious or disappointed if they don't know about Japan during 19th century. In order to avoid spoilers i won't share more and i advice you not to search for additional info before you watch the show unless you know everything already.

I have seen many historical dramas and in my opinion Ryomaden is one of the best. A masterpiece !
