Trivia

The storyline involving the male married penguins reflects real life, as the state of Iowa had legalized same-sex marriage (though obviously for humans and not penguins) when the episode aired. The movie Cedar Rapids would later have a scene that referred to the same legislation. See more »

Good season opener
9 April 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I originally thought Parks and Recreation was a cheap hack of The Office after seeing the pilot and judging it off as being so. But I'm glad I gave the show another shot. This episode was hilarious, well-written, and interesting.

In the episode, Leslie unknowingly marries two male penguins and subsequently causes chaos and unrest in the community of Pawnee. She is hated by some and loved by others, even to the extent of having three drinks in a gay bar named after her.

The characters of the show are quite likable, all except Mark in my opinion, and this episode shows it. Andy is at his best, comedy-wise, and so are the rest of the characters. This episode serves as a nice start to the second season.
