Decent slice of life anime
26 February 2011 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

The opening scenes of this series do not suggest it is going to be a comedy as Kana, a thirteen year old orphan who lives with her grandmother is left all alone when she dies... she walks the streets and eventually finds a home and place to work with a group of other girls. Her new job entails delivering copies of the Fuushin Gazette. This being a slice of life series the following episodes follow the day to day lives of Kana and her co-workers.

Apart from Kana the main cast consists of her boss, Saki who is the most serious character despite being even younger than Kana; girlfriends Yume and Yuuki; college girl Haruka who has a rather disturbing interest in young girls and drinks a little too much; Hinata who perpetually fails her college entrance exams and Mika, the only main character not working for Saki, she is Kana's age and works for a rival paper. The cast are a fun group to watch, even Haruku whose behaviour would get her locked up in real life! The activities the girls get up to are regular day to day things done in a way that provides laughs rather than far-fetched escapades found in many comedies.

There were enough laughs to be had during the series and plenty of heart warming moments when I couldn't help smiling as well as one or two rather touching scenes where it looks as if things might turn melancholy. While the idea that a young orphan would be allowed to fend for herself or that an elementary school girl could run a business require one to suspend ones disbelief the series is fun to watch. It was refreshing that lesbian couple Yume and Yuuki were neither treated as strange nor used for fan-service instead they were treated like any other couple would be. While Haraku's antics provided some laughs it was a little disturbing to say the least that the subject of her affections was only thirteen. At the time of writing this series can be watched free legally on Crunchyroll so if you like slice of life comedies I recommend going there and checking it out.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
