During the shooting of this film, Daniel Craig (Will Atenton) and Rachel Weisz (Libby) met and started an affair, in which their relationship was publicly announced several months later. They married in a discreet ceremony. When asked about the movie, Craig said, "The movie didn't turn out great. But I met my wife. Fair trade."
Director Jim Sheridan fought with Morgan Creek's head, Jim Robinson, continuously on the set over the shape of the script and the production of the movie. After Sheridan re-shot some scenes because they did not go down well with test audiences, Morgan Creek took away the film from Sheridan's hands to re-cut it themselves. As a result, they created the trailer, which many felt gave away too many of the movie's secrets. As a result, Sheridan, Daniel Craig, and Rachel Weisz refused to promote the film to the press.
Jim Sheridan initially filed a request with the Director's Guild of America to have his name removed from the credits, due to the film being taken away and re-cut by Morgan Creek Productions.
Rachel McAdams was originally cast as Libby.
Even though the movie set in New England, none of the principal cast are American. Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig are both English, and Naomi Watts is Australian.
This was the second film Rachel McAdams dropped out of, which also starred Daniel Craig. She previously opted out of Casino Royale (2006).
Taylor Geare and Claire Geare, who play on-screen sisters, are real-life sisters.
