2013 Migrating Forms: Official Lineup

9 December 2013 6:00 AM, PST | Underground Film Journal | See recent Underground Film Journal news »

Big changes are in store for the 5th annual Migrating Forms experimental media festival, which is set to run December 11-17.

Well, that’s the first change: Moving from its traditional spot in March to December. More importantly, though, the fest is moving physical locations. Instead of it’s usual home of the Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan, this year’s Migrating Forms will be screening at the BAMcinématek in Brooklyn.

The festivities will begin on Dec. 11 with the U.S. premiere of four new short films by media artist Ryan Trecartin. Each film involves a unique cast of characters, including Trecartin’s actual high school classmates and a group of reality TV show hopefuls, navigating their complex social strata.

The rest of the fest will screen challenging feature-length material, such as Drew Tobia’s outrageous See You Next Tuesday; the family drama The Unity of Things by Daniel Schmidt »

'Mom's' Anna Faris: 'I had a Barbie whorehouse' with murder mysteries as a child

23 October 2013 8:26 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

"Mom" star Anna Faris stopped by "Conan" Wednesday night (Oct. 23), where she talked about

her Barbie Dream House growing up -- it was not a house of dreams, it was a house of ill repute.

"I was fascinated with murder as a child. ... I would create Barbie murder mysteries. One Barbie would die and the rest of the Barbies had to figure out who the murderer was," says Faris. "It was usually Peaches 'n Cream. She's like a Southern Belle Barbie. You gotta keep your eye on ol' Peaches. She'll kill ya."

"My mom doesn't know this, so please don't tell her," Faris continues. "There was a weird sexual component to it. Yeah, ol' Peaches. I had like a ... Barbie whore house?"

"You can still find those on eBay," cracks Andy Richter. »

Goth Barbie? Monster High dolls are revolutionizing Mattel

17 July 2013 6:41 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Frankie Stein and Draculara are two of the leaders of the pack in the world of Monster High, a brand boasting dolls, books, webisodes, television specials on Nickelodeon and straight-to-dvd movies like 2012's "Ghouls Rule." They are also two members of a toy line that is now the second best-selling doll worldwide, behind its predecessor, Barbie.

NPR describes the Mattel fashion dolls as looking "like the underfed love children of Tim Burton and Lady Gaga." And it's true: Frankie, Draculara and friends let their freak flags fly. "The message about the brand is really to celebrate your own freaky flaws, especially as bullying has become such a hot topic," says Cathy Cline, who is responsible for marketing Mattel's girls' brands.

Inspired by young girls' love of "Twilight" vampires and werewolves, zombies, and goth fashions, Mattel produced Monster High with no idea it would morph into a billion-dollar brand in three short years. »

Sarah Gadon Cast in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, May Play Mary Jane Watson

21 June 2013 4:05 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Director Marc Webb recently revealed that Mary Jane Watson has been completely cut out of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." The plan is to save the character for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" and to replace Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), who already shot scenes as Mary Jane for the sequel. Webb says that Woodley will be too busy to return for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," leaving him with no other choice but to find another actress. And now comes word that the role may go to Canadian actress Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis, Dream House). While this has yet to be confirmed, Gadon just revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she's joining "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise. When asked if she'll be playing Mary Jane, Gadon refused to answer to the question. Stay tuned. »

Jim Sheridan to Direct Baseball/World War II Drama, Playing With The Enemy

1 May 2013 2:04 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director Jim Sheridan's last film, Dream House, did not go well.  It didn't go well to the point of Sheridan actually wanting his name removed from the credits.  Hopefully, the In America director will have better luck with his next picture, Playing with the Enemy.  Deadline reports that Sheridan has signed on to helm the drama, which is based on Gary W. Moore's non-fiction novel of the same name.  The story is based on Moore's father, Gene Moore, a 15-year-old baseball prodigy who was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940, and used his time in the Navy to create a relationship with German POWs in Louisiana during World War II.  The plot also involves the father-son relationship between the Gene and Gary Moore.  It sounds like a good story, and definitely in the vein of what audiences are looking for from their baseball movies.  As we've seen with 42 and Moneyball, »

Wme Signs ‘My Left Foot’ Helmer Jim Sheridan

24 April 2013 10:48 AM, PDT | Deadline | See recent Deadline news »

Exclusive: Wme just signed Jim Sheridan, the Irish filmmaker who has been in play since his CAA agent Bob Bookman left to join Paradigm. Sheridan also signed with Manage-Ment’s Dan Halsted to be his manager. I kind of figured Sheridan would follow Bookie. But Wme pulled off a coup, just as the agency did when it shook loose Paranormal Activity helmer Oren Peli after his agent Martin Spencer left CAA to join Resolution. In the case of Sheridan, Wme gets a director responsible for what in my book are three bonafide classic films–My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father, and The Boxer. He also helmed the autobiographical In America, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ and Brothers. His last film, Dream House, was a misfire, and he had long fought to bring I, Claudius to the screen to no avail, but a good filmmaker is a good filmmaker. »

The husband-and-wife duo will appear together in Harold Pinter's Betrayal, a play about an adulterous couple

Real-life husband and wife Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz are to play an adulterous stage couple in a Broadway production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal.

Weisz will make her Broadway debut in Pinter's 1978 study in deception, which charts an extramarital affair in reverse.

Her character, Emma, is married to Craig's Robert, but is having an affair with Jerry, played by rising star Rafe Spall.

James Bond star Craig last appeared on Broadway in 2009 in A Steady Rain, where he received positive notices opposite Hugh Jackman even though the play itself did not.

"The Following" 1.08 Recap: "Is This Place Insane or What?"

12 March 2013 8:37 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Now that Joe and his Followingers are happily nested in the Joe Carroll Dream House, the show - and Emma, in particular - seems to want to pretend that the previous seven weeks never happened. It's a whole new show, with a whole new cast and a whole new focus! The only true constant is, of course, the familiar face of star Kevin Bacon - which, like a trusty, well-worn baseball mitt, is always ready to catch whatever curveball the show throws his way.

Let's see if Ep. 8 got it over the plate, shall we?

Okay, so they Finally changed the intro, after I complained last week. Is someone up there listening?

Joe (James 100%PureFoy) tells Joe Junior (Don'tKnow Don'tCare) that he knows that he is afraid of him, but he hopes that will change. Good luck with that. And Joe Junior (Joeliet?), thanks for coming to work - you can go home now, »

"The Following" 1.07 Recap: "Let Us In, Let Us In!" "Let Us Out, Let Us Out!"

Before we tackle this week's exercise in believability-stretching, can anyone tell me why the "Previously, on The Following..." bit at the beginning of the show is always Exactly the same? Can you imagine if The Walking Dead started every single episode with a square-one reminder that there was a zombie plague that took over the earth? The only other show I can think of that does this at the beginning of every episode is Arrow, which seems to delight in reminding us that once upon a time Stephen Amell was stuck on an island with nothing but a very bad wig to keep him alive. At this point, if you don't know that Joe Carroll killed some chicks and escaped from jail, you should probably be watching something else.

Emma (Valorie Curry) and wee Joey (Don'tknow Don'tcare) pull into a creepy garage and meet an even creepier dude named Bo. »

Barbie Dream House on sale for $25 million: Mattel knows she's just a doll, right?

8 February 2013 3:46 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Look, she may have been named after a real-live person, but Barbie is just a doll. And while she has certainly taken on a life of her own since her debut in 1959, it seems the folks at Mattel have lost track of the line between real and play.

Enter Barbie's Dream House. This lovely three-story pink mansion in Malibu boasts a private beach, pink granite counter tops, heated pink marble flooring, an outdoor jacuzzi tub, and never-ending ocean views thanks to the lack of a fourth wall. All of this can be yours for the low, low price of $25 million.

Yep, Barbie's Dream Home is for sale, and it actually has an Mls listing page on Trulia. After 40 years in the mansion, Mattel says Barbie -- remember, a doll, not a person -- is ready to downsize. "Barbie has got a lot of really great memories: she has had over 130 careers, »
