Although several months have passed, Annie is still having trouble coming to terms with her husband Harry's death. Grief, however, isn't the primary emotion in her case. Nancy continues her affair with Lord Hoxley and Joyce sees them together. She is still under suspicion due to her letters in Italian but all of the girls learn that Esther has been steaming open and reading their correspondence. Although the War Office has cleared her of any wrongdoing, Sgt. Tucker continues his vendetta against Nancy forcing Hoxley to intervene. The rationing inspector, Mr. Lockhurst, pays the farm a visit to ensure they are following requirements. One particular leg of ham is of concern to Finch. Joyce receives a surprise from her husband and subsequently learns from Sgt. Tucker that he's gone AWOL. She convinces him to return but one of the girls lets it slip and Tucker soon arrests him
