"Straight Edge isn't a lifestyle, it's life"

A well done documentary on one of the most positive, controversial and far reaching ideologies, "Edge: Perspectives on Drug Free Culture" takes the viewer on a tour into the lives, places and the mindset of unique individuals who made a.choice to better their lives. Founded in the late - 1970s by Ian MacKaye who went on to spread the word and ideal with his work in bands like Minor Threat, Embrace and Fugazi the philosophy and statement of purpose were picked-up by like minded people who didn't share the negative and self destructive lifestyles of the Rock and Punk scenes of the time. Interviews with musical artists and people of various professions highlight the lifesaving and liberating effects of the belief. Not only is the scene's well known vice-free practice discussed but other advocations of the movement like vegetarianism, animal rights, feminism, etc., are touched on. If there's one snag with the film it's the lack of comprehensiveness. An interview with the controversial and combative Ted Nugent, perhaps the grandaddy of the scene, who lived the straight life in the drug-addled '60s - ' 70s would have been a good point of origin. MacKaye's longtime compadre and fellow Hardcore and Straight Edge legend Henry Rollins is another one who is sorely missed here. The two men would have given strong, pointed and truthful opinions on the matter that would have enhanced the film. More live musical performances should have been shown and performances by other legendary Straight Edge bands like Rites of Spring and Fugazi should have been shown. A fine document on one of the most important movements this appealed personally - as an Edger myself the film serves as affirmation. Keep it clean: no drugs, no alcohol and no casual sex. "I've got Straight Edge!"
