The language spoken by the invaders in the film is a totally made up language, sampled from many languages worldwide and then scrambled.
The Australian cities of Townsville and Port Hedland are mentioned in the film during a radio broadcast. In the novels, all of the cities/towns referenced in Australia are fictitious.

In the novel, Wirrawee is located in Victoria. In the film, it is in New South Wales.
