Box office dips in 2011: A year-end analysis

30 December 2011 10:02 AM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Box office junkies, unite! It’s time to break down the year that was at the movies using the thing that we love most — the numbers!

Blockbuster franchise films reigned supreme at the North American box office in 2011. Of the ten highest grossing movies, the top seven — led by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with $381 million — are sequels, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (No. 9, $176.7 million) is a prequel, and Thor (No. 8, $181 million) and Captain America: The First Avenger (No. 10, $176.7 million), while not sequels, are part of the larger Avengers franchise which Marvel will roll out next year. »

Greatest Horror Movies Ever Made Part 7: The 62 Greatest (# 62-32)

29 October 2011 2:30 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Choosing my favourite horror films of all time is like choosing between my children – not that I have children, but if I did, I am sure I would categorize them quite like my DVD collection. As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. Also, it was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried. I based my list taking into consideration three points:

1- Technical accomplishments / artistry and their influence on the genre.

2- How many times I’ve revisited the films and how easily it makes for a repeated viewings.

3- Its story, atmosphere and how much it affected me when I first watched them.

Finally, there are many great films such as The Witchfinder General, The Wickerman and even Hour Of The Wolf that won’t appear here. I »

42 – Nosferatu: The First Vampire

Directed by F.W. Murnau

1922 – Germany

The earliest surviving film based on Dracula is Nosferatu, an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. One of the first vampire movies, it is perhaps on one of the best vampire movies ever made. Generally creepy from beginning to the last frame.

41- Spirits Of The Dead (Histoires extraordinaires)

Directed by

Federico Fellini (segment Toby Dammit)

Louis Malle (segment William Wilson)

Roger Vadim (segment Metzengerstein)

1968 – France

First thing to notice is the three directors: Federico Fellini, Louis Malle and Roger Vadim. Second you need to take notice in the cast which includes Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Alain Delon, Terence Stamp, Salvo Randone, James Robertson Justice, Françoise Prévost and Marlène Alexandre. Spirits Of The Dead is an adaptation of three Edgar Allan Poe stories that amount to one mixed bad, but with one incredible segment that needs to be seen. »

Release Date: Nov. 22, 2011

Price: DVD $24.98, Blu-ray $29.98

Studio: Entertainment One

A dysfunction quartet takes a breather in The Family Tree.

A bizarre accident leaves a desperate housewife with a case of amnesia and a family that turns their dysfunctional setting up to “11″ in the 2011 independent comedy film The Family Tree.

The housewife who sets the story into motion is Serenity, Ohio’s Bunny Burnett (Hope Davis, TV’s Mildred Pierce), and her family  includes husband Jack (Dermot Mulroney, Jolene) and their twin 17-year-olds Eric (Max Theriot, Chloe) and Kelly (Britt Robertson, Scream 4). One wouldn’t think that Bunny’s amnesiac condition couldn’t make things any better — the family’s “problems” include a stew of past relationships, kids with guns, suicidal teachers, a very zealous religious club, misinterpreted advances, corporate down-sizing and one very tricky mother-in-law — but, somehow, her loss of memory does wonders for everyone!

Tyler Perry tops 'Forbes' list of the highest-paid men in entertainment over the past year

Madea Goes to the Bank. Okay, so that probably won’t be the title for the next installment of the wildly popular film series, but it could be considering Tyler Perry’s titular character has definitely helped him rake in the cash. This week, Forbes released their list of the highest-paid men in Hollywood (not to be mistaken with their list from last month of the highest-earning actors) and the multi-faceted Perry, who has taken on writing, directing, acting, and producing duties in film and television, topped them all with an intake of an estimated $130 million from May 2010-2011.

Summer, Bloody Summer

6 September 2011 8:41 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

As our last thrilling episode ended in June, we had left poor, helpless, hapless Hollywood tied to railroad tracks with the July/August Express out of Union Station barreling down, dastardly Audience Disinterest at the throttle, henchman Audience Apathy throwing on more coal.

But wait!  Are those cavalry bugles heard from just over the hill?

Yes!  Coming to the rescue, led by our hero Captain Overseas Markets and his sidekick Ancillary Sales!

And just in the nick of time, too!

Seriously.  Because I doubt there’s been a Monday’s reading of weekend box office tallies by studio execs this year which hasn’t been accompanied by a silent prayer of thanks for overseas receipts.

Over the last 20-30 years or so, it hasn’t been unusual for top-earning releases – particularly action-driven fare – to pull in more revenue overseas than at home, but recent years have seen the dynamic ratchet up to a dizzying level. »

Bow Wow Talks: 'Madea' DVD Release, Lil Wayne’s Jay-z Diss, New Series With Ice Cube & More

Growing up in the entertainment industry can be detrimental for some young stars. For 24-year-old Bow Wow (born Shad Gregory Moss), who landed his first glimpse of stardom at 6 years old by appearing at the beginning of Snoop Dogg’s classic 1993 video “Gin and Juice,” traveling down the road of fame and success has been a prosperous experience.

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Bow Wow discussed the DVD release of “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” his thoughts on label mate Lil Wayne dissing Jay-z, the birth of his daughter Shai, as well as his forthcoming network series with Ice Cube.

What’s your reaction to "Madea’s Big Happy Family" being out on DVD?

Madea's Big Happy Family

1 September 2011 8:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Tyler Perry’s work never aspires to the best of comedy or drama, and it’s not uncommon for him to cast actors and actresses prone to overacting. Maybe they’re just responding to the hackneyed scripts or Tyler Perry’s inept direction, but every now and then a quality performance or film manages to surface seemingly in spite of all the bad creative decisions made. Unfortunately, Madea’s Big Happy Family, the film adaptation of his stage play, has very few positive aspects working in its favor as this time around Perry seemed more intent on cramming the screen with the stars of his TV series instead of finding some genuine talent. The film sputters along from one scene to the next with little plot to speak of; it’s as if Perry has finally lost all touch with how to tell a story and decided he’d just »
