Sex & Nudity

  • Celia's husband sneaks up behind her and passionately kisses her, saying how "hungry" he is.

Violence & Gore

  • Minny is (implied) constantly assaulted by her husband, and we see Minny avoiding a plate being thrown against a wall. Aibileen is on the phone and hears the rest of the struggle (offscreen).

Profanity

  • 7 uses of "sh--", 2 uses of "g--damn", 1 use of "a--hole". A dozen or more uses of "n----r".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Virtually everyone, Skeeter included, smokes. And in a self-conscious wink at people's attitudes toward smoking during that era, Skeeter's boss says, "I guarantee you one day they're going to figure out that cigarettes kill you."
  • Social drinking is almost as frequent as the smoking. Many scenes picture (white) people downing mixed drinks or martinis. A would-be-suitor for Skeeter is obviously drunk, and he keeps ordering shots. Celia is likewise inebriated at a socialite event, and is sick (off screen). Hilly drinks and drives in one scene.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The movie depicts how African Americans were treated in the Civil Rights era. This is upsetting and very offensive.
  • A scene where a woman spanks her child without good cause may be disturbing, though it is not actually shown on camera.
  • The scene where a maid is arrested for stealing may be very intense.
  • The final scene is very emotional and intense.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman is arrested for stealing a priceless ring from Hilly. She is dragged forcefully by cops, pushed onto the hood of the cop car, and beaten with a nightstick while Hilly and her young son watch. The camera cuts away just before the stick makes impact. We hear of a man shot and killed by the KKK, and we see Aibileen run for her life for fear of getting shot.
  • Celia has a miscarriage, and we see her on the bathroom floor, a brief image of (a lot) of blood between her legs, as she screams. She later buries the child in her front yard, with her other miscarriages. She has never told her husband.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A scene where a woman eats a pie with human feces in it. However, it isn't known at the time, and is played for comedic effect.
