Octavia Spencer was awarded $940,000 in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday as part of a default judgment against a weight loss company, Sensa Products Inc., which she claimed wrongfully fired her and still owed her money.

Good luck in collecting on this case,” Judge Michael Stern told Spencer’s attorneys, after ruling in her favor. “Maybe you can sell the product at a garage sale.”

Barack Obama's favourite movie of 2014 is Boyhood

18 December 2014 2:14 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Barack Obama has revealed his favourite movie of 2014.

The Us President named Boyhood, Richard Linklater's coming-of-age drama, as his top film pick of the past 12 months.

"Boyhood was a great movie. That, I think, was my favourite movie this year," Politico quotes him as saying.

Boyhood follows the life of Mason Jr (Ellar Coltrane) from the age of 6 to 18 and was filmed over the course of 12 years. Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette feature in the supporting cast and both recently nabbed Golden Globe nominations for their performances.

Boyhood, Birdman and civil rights drama Selma are among the early frontrunners this awards season, with Academy Awards nominations due to be revealed in January

First Lady Michelle Obama didn't reveal her cinema favourites of 2014, but did offer up her thoughts on David Fincher's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's best-selling thriller Gone Girl.

Another Brick In The Wall: Viola Davis To Run ‘Suicide Squad’

18 December 2014 12:31 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

It takes a brave woman to boss Jared Leto and Tom Hardy around, and Warner Bros appear to have found just that as Viola Davis joins the cast of Suicide Squad. According to reports she will play Amanda Waller, aka “The Wall”, the formidable government mastermind who assembles the squad, known as “Task Force X”. The star of How To Get Away With Murder faces up not only to Leto’s Joker and Hardy’s Rick Flagg, but also Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot, Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang.

Rumours about who would take the role have included Oprah Winfrey (a bizarre choice in some ways but perhaps an inspired one) and Davis’ The Help co-star Octavia Spencer. Waller was created by John Ostrander, Len Wein and John Byrne. She first appeared in the DC Universe in 1986. For one storyline she »

Suicide Squad: Viola Davis, who has twice been nominated for an Academy Award (Doubt, The Help), is in line to play a villainous role in DC's Suicide Squad. She would play Amanda Waller, a character often charged with running the team in the comic book series. Schedule issues may be an issue, however, since she is also busy starring in the hit TV show How to Get Away with Murder. The cast currently includes Will Smith, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney. [Latino Review]   Pontius Pilate: Brad Pitt, who was attached to star in a new movie titled Pontius Pilate (a character depicted above by Jean Marais in a 1962 version), has dropped out, and so has financier-distributor Warner Bros., but the project is still moving forward. Exclusive: David Oyelowo On Martin Luther King, ‘The Threat of Death Was on Him Every Day’

17 December 2014 9:00 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Anyone who saw Lee Daniel’s: The Butler last year will recall David Oyelowo’s stunning turn as a young Civil Rights activist, who clashes with his dutiful father (Forest Whitaker). The classically-trained U.K. native has since taken on a string of notable roles in films like Interstellar, A Most Violent Year and Selma - which features his lauded portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Oyelowo’s mesmerizing take on the icon manages to encapsulate his unflinching public persona and his moments of frailty. King may have had a gift for delivering poetic calls to action but he was also surrounded by sorrow and grappled with the threat of death daily.

Directed by Ava DuVernay, Selma illustrates the organization and execution of the legendary walk from Selma to Montgomery that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The haunting drama marks the actor’s second collaboration with DuVernay following »

Davis Set As Suicide Squad's Amanda Waller?

17 December 2014 7:35 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Following the announcement of the main cast for David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" at DC and Warner Bros. Pictures, a report quickly emerged that three high profile actresses were under consideration for the role of Amanda Waller.

Today, Latino Review reports that the list has been narrowed down to one with "The Help" and "How To Get Away with Murder" star Viola Davis having apparently scored the gig, beating out both Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer for the coveted role.

Davis will play Waller, a prison warden and government agent placed in charge of the titular squad, a semi-secret covert group of former super villains who work for the government in return for their freedom.

Davis is expected to work around her TV schedule to film her role. If the report is accurate, she joins a cast that includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, »

Viola Davis is Taking the Role of Amanda Waller in 'Suicide Squad'

17 December 2014 7:28 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The cast of Suicide Squad was officially confirmed at the beginning of the month with Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. But that's only our heroes. What about their overseers? Well, after names like Oprah Winfrey an Octavia Spencer were said to be in contention for the role of prison warden Amanda Waller, Latino Review is reporting that Viola Davis (Ender's Game, The Help) is taking the role of a former congressional aide and government agent placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former supervillains working in return for amnesty. More below! However, it doesn't entirely seem like a done deal as the report says the part goes to Davis only if the filmmakers can work with her schedule on the hit new »

Viola Davis Cast as Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad

17 December 2014 7:11 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

One of the last big casting announcements we've been waiting to see for David Ayer's Suicide Squad was for the character Amanda Waller. This character is a prison warden and a former congressional aide and government agent that oversees the team. She is kind of like the Nick Fury of the group. According to Latino-Review, Viola Davis (The Help, Ender's Game) has landed the part. She's a very talented actress who seems perfect for the role.

Right now the studio is just trying to figure out how to work around the schedule of her TV series, How To Get Away With Murder. She will join Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.

Davis was rumored to be up for the part when the initial casting of the film was announced. »

Viola Davis set to play Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad

17 December 2014 4:25 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

A couple of weeks back we reported the casting news for Suicide Squad now that the whole team is in place. But one name missing was the lady behind the team, Amanda Waller.

Well, according to Latino Review (who are hit and miss with their reports), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) is now the front runner for the role. It was previously reported that Oprah Winfrey (Selma) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) were also in the running, with Winfrey taking the lead, but  this new report seems to think however that Davis is a lock for the role.

Curiously though, Latino Review doesn’t mention whether Davis will be signed to a multi-picture deal, which could mean that Amanda Waller’s role in the DC Universe could be short lived.

Suicide Squad will be released on August 5th 2016 and directed by David Ayer (Fury) with a cast »

Suicide Squad May Have Found Its Amanda Waller

16 December 2014 10:02 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Several weeks ago, Warner Bros. announced the cast of their upcoming DC film Suicide Squad. While most of the team was revealed, there was one crucial character missing from the lineup: Amanda Waller. As the commander of the officially-designated Task Force X, Waller is one of the most dangerous individuals in the DC universe, and a frequent adversary to both superheroes and supervillains. A character that.s so badass that she doesn't even blink an eye telling Batman off. Now we might know who's playing this force of nature...so to speak. Latino Review is reporting that Viola Davis has been cast as Waller for the 2016 blockbuster. Davis was one of several contenders for the role, alongside her The Help co-star Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey. The actress is currently starring in the ABC series How To Get Away With Murder, and the role is contingent on it being able »

Warner Bros. Finally Cast 'Amanda Waller' For David Ayer's Suicide Squad

16 December 2014 6:49 PM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Latino-Review reports that Viola Davis (Prisoners) has nabbed the role of Amanda Waller in David Ayer's upcoming big screen adaptation of Suicide Squad. She was among those eyed for the role when the cast was announced officially earlier this year, with Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer also said to be in the running at the time. However, it now appears as if The Help star has joined the already amazing cast which includes the likes of Jared Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and Margot Robbie. The only possible issue is her TV schedule - Davis stars in How To Get Away With Murder - but they will more than likely find a way to work around that. Thoughts on the casting? »

Ava DuVernay is 'stunned' over her Golden Globe directing nod for 'Selma'

11 December 2014 3:16 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

One of the nicest surprises from this morning's 2015 Golden Globe nominations was the love the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestowed upon Ava DuVernay's "Selma." The dramatic story behind the historic 1965 Selma-to-Birmingham march earned four nominations including Best Picture - Drama, Best Original Song ("Glory" by John Legend and Common), Best Actor in a Drama (David Oyelowo) and Best Director (DuVernay). It's somewhat disheartening that DuVernay is only the fifth woman nominated by the HFPA (still more than the Academy Awards for the moment) and the first African-American one, but this sort of love for one of the best pictures of the year? We can only hope Oscar is listening. DuVernay and Oyelowo were in Toronto this morning following a special Tiff screening last night. She jumped on the phone to chat about the big day. *** HitFix: Congratulations Ava! How is Toronto? Where were you when you heard about the nominations? »

David Oyelowo’s Preparation to Portray Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in ‘Selma’

Managing Editor

British actor David Oyelowo’s portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s Selma has received praise since the film premiered at AFI Fest. The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Farber said, “His rousing speeches are superbly done, and his moments of introspection and self-doubt retrieve the humanity in a leader who has come to seem larger than life.”

Now, he isn’t the only British actor playing a Southerner in the film: Tom Wilkinson embodies President Lyndon B. Johnson while Tim Roth depicts Governor George Wallace.

Oyelowo will receive this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Breakthrough Performance Award, and if he earns an Oscar nomination for his role as King, it wouldn’t be the first time an actor landed a nomination for personifying an iconic figure from a different country: American actress Meryl Streep won for her portrayal »

They will have to look at the script when it’s finished... I’d do that for free. I probably shouldn’t say that live on TV.”Feig, the director of the women-only spectre-trapping reboot, has previously said that his dream cast would include Melissa McCarthy (another Bridesmaids veteran), Kristen Wiig (another Bridesmaids veteran), Linda Cardellini (perhaps still best known for her work on another Feig project, Freaks And Geeks) and Emma Stone (The Help, The Amazing Spider-Man, »
