The Ice Queen Rises in Huntsman: Winter's War Blu-ray Preview | Exclusive

22 August 2016 3:40 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After the success of 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, which took in $155.3 million domestically and $396.5 million from a $160 million budget, Universal Pictures decided to go in another direction for its follow-up. Instead of telling a sequel, the studio decided to go back before Snow White's story with the prequel The Huntsman: Winter's War. While fans get ready for the Blu-ray and DVD release tomorrow, we have an exclusive preview that introduces Emily Blunt's character, Freya.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment provided us with this preview, which features Emily Blunt revealing more about her character, the Ice Queen. The actress teases that villains rarely have much back story, but she was quite pleased that there was such a rich origin for Freya. We also hear from her on-screen sister, Charlize Theron, who reveals how Freya goes on a journey to discover her power, while director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan describes Freya as the "beta" to Ravenna's alpha. »

Suicide Squad tops domestic box office for third consecutive weekend

21 August 2016 12:07 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Suicide Squad has continued its impressive run at the North American box office, topping the chart for the third consecutive weekend – a feat that neither Man of Steel nor Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to accomplish.

Suicide Squad is expected to pull in around $20.7 million domestically over the Friday-Sunday period, having brushed aside competition from Ben-Hur, which tanked in its opening weekend.

The DC supervillain ensemble has earned $262.2 million in the States, and its worldwide haul now sits at $572.6 million. That puts it ahead of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which earned $542.7 million earlier this year, and it has one major market left to open in, Japan, where it debuts on September 10th.

Suicide Squad crosses the half billion mark at the global box office

18 August 2016 3:27 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It may not have impressed critics, but Warner Bros.Suicide Squad is certainly proving to be a big hit with audiences; the film smashed the August domestic opening record, and has now surpassed the half billion dollar mark at the box office, with the DC supervillain team-up hitting $509 million around the globe in just 13 days.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see audiences around the world coming out in such a big way for Suicide Squad,” states Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of worldwide distribution. “We have several major markets yet to open, and expect to continue seeing strong returns at the box office for the weeks to come.”

“We’re thrilled with the huge numbers on Suicide Squad, and to be coming out of an already highly successful summer with such a big win for our slate,” adds Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and distribution. “The film is in position »

Participant Media Shutting Down Its Pivot TV Channel (Exclusive)

17 August 2016 10:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Participant Media plans to shut down its flagging cable TV outlet, Pivot, as the multi-media company continues a makeover that began last fall with the hiring of CEO David Linde.

The channel that created shows like Joseph Gordon Levitt’s crowd-sourced “HitRecord” will go dark some time in the late fall or winter, a decision the company plans to announce Wednesday morning.

Participant founder Jeff Skoll had invested well over $200 million to form the new linear television “network,” but it launched right at a time that viewers — particularly its target audience of millennials — were fleeing traditional television for online alternatives.

Some of the channel’s programs won critical favor, like “Fortitude,” a drama about the oddball denizens of a town in the Arctic,  “Please Like Me,” an Australian relationship dramedy and “Secret Lives of Americans,” a reality-style show with everyday people exposing their secrets via cameras, cell phones and laptops. Suicide Squad suffers big drop but fends off Sausage Party to stay top of the box office

14 August 2016 12:49 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After smashing the August box office opening record last weekend, Warner Bros.Suicide Squad managed to fend off competition from the adult animated comedy Sausage Party to hold on to top spot domestically, but much like the previous instalment of the DC Extended Universe, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it suffered a rather steep drop.

The David Ayer-directed supervillain team-up grossed $47.7 million – down 67.3% from last weekend – while Sausage Party followed in second place with $33.6 million. Suicide Squad is now up to $222.8 million on home soil, and has grossed a solid $465.3 million worldwide so far after just twelve days.

Will Suicide Squad have enough legs to reach the reported $750 – $800 million mark that it is said to require to turn a profit for Warner Bros.? Or will the lack of a release in China cost it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Jared Leto says The Joker and Superman would be interesting to see on screen together

13 August 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Following the release of Suicide Squad, Jared Leto took a moment out from complaining about how many of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor to say that he’d like to see his Joker going up against Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight in the Batman solo movie, and now he’s told IGN that it would be interesting to see the Clown Prince of Crime sharing the screen with the Man of Steel.

Superman seems like a lot of fun though for the Joker,” said Leto. “The Joker and Superman would be interesting to see on screen because Superman’s so stoic and morally-centred. I think that the Joker would really enjoy that. Superman is just the classic hero, and The Joker opposite any classic hero would be really interesting.”

Suicide Squad crosses $300 million worldwide

12 August 2016 2:14 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite getting a bit of drumming by the critics (our own Oli Davis went nuts about on the Flickering Myth Podcast), Suicide Squad is pulling in money around the world.

After a record breaking opening weekend, Suicide Squad has retained a lot of its audience and has now crossed $300 million worldwide. Its still a way off from the $750-$800 million it needs (and will struggle to get there without a Chinese release), but its a promising sign ahead of its second weekend.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer explains The Joker’s grill and ‘Damaged’ tattoo

10 August 2016 11:25 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During an interview with Empire, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has addressed one of the most controversial aspects of the DC supervillain team-up – The Joker’s tattoos and grill – explaining how they came about.

“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection,” said Ayer. “But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Hats off to the Joker – if that’s a self-inflicted prison tattoo, he’s got some really impressive penmanship.

‘Pete’s Dragon’ Star Bryce Dallas Howard Really Wants to Direct a Feature, Making a Movie With Dad Would Be a ‘Dream Come True’

10 August 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bryce Dallas Howard is checking a lot of boxes on her career bucket list. After starring in last year’s box office record-breaker “Jurassic World,” the actress and daughter of director Ron Howard landed a role in Disney’s upcoming adventure-fantasy “Pete’s Dragon,” a reimagining of the 1977 children’s classic she adored as a child. Howard was such a fan of the original film that she sought out the script for the new movie immediately upon hearing about plans for a reboot.

“I was pleasantly surprised that it was something that could stand alone and wasn’t stepping on my memories of the original,” Howard told IndieWire in a recent interview. “It was a really beautiful, powerful, magical story.”

Jared Leto says there are enough deleted scenes from Suicide Squad for a Joker movie

9 August 2016 2:29 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Jared Leto seems to have spent the majority of the press tour for Suicide Squad bemoaning the amount of his scenes as the Joker which ended up on the cutting room floor, and he’s been at it again during an interview with the BBC, stating that there’s enough for an entire Joker movie.

“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity. Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie… If I were to die tomorrow, maybe the studio would roll something out. Rated R or rated X performance in there somewhere.”

Pete’s Dragon movie review: big friendly dragon

8 August 2016 12:51 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

More like a pleasant walk in a redwood forest with a boy and his dragon than a rollicking adventure, but its serenity and warm heart are infectious. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I suppose this new Pete’s Dragon falls under the umbrella of Disney’s ongoing project to produce live-action remakes of all of its animated features. The 1977 film was mostly live-action, of course, except for the key element of the mischievous giant reptile itself, which was really cartoonish visually. The opportunity for a dragon do-over in the era of lifelike CGI must have been irresistible.

And this new dragon — again called Elliot — is a delight and a marvel: a sweet-faced creature of green fur and exuberant spirit, he may be monstrously enormous, but there’s little of the monster about him. He »

With Suicide Squad being critically panned, could Warner Bros. insist on further reshoots to both Wonder Woman and Justice League? Oli and Luke argue that the Dceu won’t be able to shake the studio’s interference until the newly created production house DC Films, headed by comic book mastermind Geoff Johns, is fully out of Warner Bros’ grasp.

Rumoured list of deleted scenes from Suicide Squad

7 August 2016 12:02 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In the lead up to the release of Suicide Squad this past week, details emerged about two competing cuts of the movie, while Jared Leto revealed that many of his scenes as The Joker ended up on the cutting room floor.

Unlike Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which received an extended version for its home entertainment release, director David Ayer has stated that the theatrical version of Suicide Squad is the cut of the movie, and so it’s likely we’ll have to hope that many of the deleted scenes end up as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray and DVD release.

However, we may now have some idea of what was removed from the film, with a user on Reddit posting an alleged list of all the deleted scenes:

“In early cuts, the movie’s opening detailed June Moon’s possession by Enchantress in real time. Reshoots »
