Don Kaye Jul 17, 2017

A “suburban fantasy world” is the subject of a new Pixar film, whilst there might just be a Planes spin-off coming too...

Although Pixar has sequels like Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2 in the works, the studio still continues to develop and produce original movies. John Lasseter took the opportunity at D23 in California over the weekend to announce a brand new original project from the company, an untitled “suburban fantasy world” movie to be helmed by Monsters University director Dan Scanlon.

Coming to the stage with little else at this point but some concept art, Scanlon was armed with one more thing: the emotional inspiration behind the film. Scanlon detailed how he lost his father when he was very young, with just a few words on a voice recording to even know what he sounded like, and that he and his brother have always »

How Disney and Pixar’s Animated Box Office Reign Could be Dethroned by Universal’s Minions

15 June 2017 12:08 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Pixar’s “Cars 3” and Illumination Entertainment’s “Despicable 3” open tomorrow and June 30, respectively; early estimates suggest it’s the Minions that will rule the world. And if that’s the case, Universal could become the most successful animation distributor in domestic box office.

Disney still holds sway on a global basis; over the last five years, Disney-distributed animation has grossed just over $5 billion to Universal’s $3.35 billion. However, as a producer Illumination’s box office is bigger than either Disney or Pixar, domestic and foreign, and with this latest round it could become more successful than both entities combined at the domestic box office. »

Poll: What’s Your Favorite Pixar Sequel?

While Pixar made its name with purely original films — “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” etc. — it’s also banking on sequels.

The latest, “Cars 3,” races into theaters this weekend. The production company has even more sequels lined up in the future, including another “Cars” installment, a highly anticipated “The Incredibles 2,” and “Toy Story 4.”

Pixar first jumped on the sequel bandwagon in 1999 with “Toy Story 2,” a follow-up to its first movie ever. A third “Toy Story” film came out more than a decade later, when many of the first movie’s fans were off to college.

Ranking The Pixar Sequels

12 June 2017 12:20 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Ahead of the release of Cars 3, Eric Bay-Andersen ranks Pixar’s sequels…

When people hear ‘sequel’, they usually think ‘shameless cash-in’, and although Disney’s purchase of Pixar must surely have influenced the number of sequels the studio has produced in the last 20 years (six with at least two more on the way), Pixar’s reputation for quality film-making means their hit-rate is higher than most. Here’s my ranking of the five they’ve released so far…

5. Cars 2

Astonishingly, the Cars franchise is the studio’s biggest money-maker when it comes to merchandise, but the second instalment is surely Pixar’s least-loved film so far (which doesn’t bode well for Cars 3). The first film had a slight charm to it, and a sweet message about the beauty of small-town life and finding happiness off the beaten track, but for the sequel they tossed all that »
