Bullock Has Hottest Opening Weekend of Her Career. Will That Help Oscar Buzz for Another Movie?

56 minutes ago | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Sandra Bullock The Heat: Bullock’s biggest opening weekend at domestic box office? (Photo: Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock in The Heat) Starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, Paul Feig’s buddy comedy The Heat opened with a remarkable — and better than initially expected — $39.11 million at 3,181 Us/Canada locations according to the June 28-30, 2013, weekend box-office figures found at Box Office Mojo. This weekend in North America, The Heat trailed only last weekend’s holdover, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University, which collected $45.6 million. (See also how White House Down does Channing Tatum no favors.”) A 20th Century Fox release reportedly budgeted at $41 million (not including marketing and distribution expenses, or contractual box-office-gross-sharing obligations), The Heat went above the $35 million I’d predicted on Saturday because that day’s estimates found at Deadline.com were lower than in reality. The Heat was up 5% on Saturday, even though Friday’s box-office take included late Thursday shows. »

Go Snail! Go! Watch a New 'Turbo' Trailer

3 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I have a feeling Turbo is going to be huge when it hits theaters on July 17. Right now Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 will fight it out for animated sequel supremacy while Dreamworks' new kid on the block may race in (pun intended) and score the box office checkered flag (no pun intended). Over the past few weeks, as marketing for the animated racing snail movie has ramped up, I've seen several people arriving at the site after searching for the trailer for the "animated snail movie", which seems to be a frequent search term. While it may be the third film in a line of big animated features, it's the only original film of the lot, and if it's any good it has a couple of weeks to make some dough before The Smurfs 2 (again, another sequel) wraps up the month. Oh, and it has Snoop Dogg (Lionc) in it. »

"White House Down" Flops! What Happened Channing Tatum?

4 hours ago | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Yes, folks, "White House Down" flopped at the box-office. Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx were no match for the star power of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy whose "The Heat" triumphed at No. 2 with a $40 million debut. "White House Down?" $25.7 million and with a reported budget of $150 million, it's a certifiable flop! Worst than "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer," and "The Hangover Part III."

So what happened? Well, first, there was a movie called "Olympus Has Fallen" that shared the same DNA as "White House Down." And actually, I found that movie better than the Tatum-Foxx collaboration. Why? Because it had a singular vision -- the terrorists are bad, but don't worry, Gerard Butler is here to save the day. Its simplicity is what saved the film.

"White House Down" has a lot of angles that people were not able to connect the dots. Is it about White House being attacked? »

Interview: Director Dan Scanlon Explains How He Left His Mark on ‘Monsters University’

6 hours ago | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

For writer/director Dan Scanlon, Monsters University does not necessarily mark his directorial debut. He wrote, directed, shot, and starring in an independent comedy called Tracy in 2009. But to compare making an independent live-action comedy to being in control of a $100-million plus budgeted animated tentpole film at Pixar — based on an existing and beloved Pixar property, no less — seems like an unfair need to do. In this context, Scanlon is the rookie. Charged with bringing characters like Mike and Sully back to the big screen, the director seemed very aware of the prestige that goes along with directing at one of the film world’s most innovative houses. Yet, as we sat down at a table just outside The Steve Jobs Building on the Pixar lot to talk about his Pixar directorial debut, the longtime storyboard artist and writer (Cars, Brave) was one other important thing: calm. If there was ever any pressure for the young »

Helen Mirren and Manish Dayal Join The Hundred-Foot Journey

6 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Helen Mirren and Indian actor Manish Dayal are set to star in The Hundred-Foot Journey for Walt Disney Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures. We first reported on the project last month, when Disney issued an August 8, 2014 release date.

The story is based on Richard Morais' novel that follows an Indian family who moves to the south of France. When they open up an Indian restaurant right across from a prominent, Michelin-rated French restaurant, a rivalry begins between the two establishments. No details were given for Helen Mirren and Manish Dayal's characters.

Lasse Hallstr&#246m (Safe Haven) is directing from a screenplay by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises), adapted from Richard Morais' book. Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake are producing, with shooting scheduled to begin this September in France and India.

Helen Mirren lent her voice to Dean Hardscrabble in Disney Pixar's Monsters University, currently playing in theaters, and she »

Pixar Plans To Pull Back On Sequels

7 hours ago | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Recently there have been a lot of Pixar sequels: Cars 2, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, and the soon to be released Monsters University.  However, fans have remarked that with the exception of the Toy Story films, Pixar haven’t had that much success with the rest. Ed Catmull, president of both Walt Disney Animation and Pixar, has taken this criticism on board and has said:

“For artistic reasons … it’s really important that we do an original film a year. Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.”

My Favourite Pixar Movie - Toy Story (1995)

7 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Flickering Myth's writing team countdown to the UK release of Monsters University by picking their favourite Pixar Movies; first up is Anthony Stokes with Toy Story...

There aren't a whole lot of "kids" movies that are widely accepted as being on par with the very best "adult" movies. Some of them may be appreciated by older audiences, but it's rare for a kid's movie - and especially an animated movie - to transcend it's genre and be held amongst the very best. Other then The Godfather, I can't think of another movie that shows up on more favorites list than Pixar's Toy Story. The fact that I just compared Toy Story to one of the most acclaimed movies ever made and most people wouldn't question it, is a testament to its quality and timelessness.

In essence Toy Story is a movie about loyalty, friendship, and identity. Granted this is a »

Weekend Box-Office Results: 'Monsters U' Beats 'The Heat', 'White House Down' Below 'Wwz'

7 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Another win for Monsters University.  While many people were predicting The Heat would overthrow the film, Monsters managed to get the edge and stay number one.  This time last year Ted was the number movie at the box-office and many thought history were to repeat itself.  That wasn’t the case, however.  White House Down’s only downfall was that it came last to Olympus Has Fallen.  It didn’t do so well, placing fourth.  »

Box Office Results: Leaderboard Updated as 'Heat' and 'White House Down' Almost $1 Million Off Estimates

7 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I've updated the RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge leaderboard after processing the results from this weekend's box office where Monsters University dipped about 45% for its second weekend at #1 with $46.5 million. The Heat and White House Down both came in $900,000 under their Sunday estimates with The Heat bringing in $39.1 million and White House Down ending the weekend with a disappointing $24.8 million. The other film readers were predicting was the second weekend of World War Z, which ended up dropping 55% for a $29.7 million weekend. In other news, Man of Steel crossed the $500 million mark worldwide this weekend -- $248.7 million domestically, and $271.7 internationally -- making it the biggest June release ever. With a reported budget of $225 million this is good news for Warner Bros. as the film is only 17 days into its overall release. As for that leaderboard, here is the current top ten, but you can see the full list of rankings right »

'White House Down' flops at the box office: What went wrong?

8 hours ago | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

"White House Down" was supposed to be one of the surefire hits of the summer.

Channing Tatum became a bona fide movie star last year with a sleeper hit trifecta of "The Vow," "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike" (not to mention being named People's Sexiest Man Alive). Jamie Foxx was coming off his biggest box office success to date with the Oscar nominated "Django Unchained." And director Roland Emmerich has experience both directing blockbuster hits ("2012," "The Day After Tomorrow") and destroying the White House in a patriotic summer movie sensation ("Independence Day").

But even with that pedigree and high profile pre-release hype dating all the way back to Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars ABC special (where Foxx and Tatum turned catchy/silly slow jam "Channing All Over Your Tatum" into a viral hit), "White House Down" shocked Hollywood with a embarrassingly limp $25.7 million estimated opening weekend.

Sandra and Louis Spend a Smiley Day at the Museum

9 hours ago | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Sandra Bullock and her son, Louis, spent a sweet afternoon at the Natural History Museum in La on Friday. The twosome held hands as they walked around the park, where Louis sported a big grin on his face. Sandra made the most of her time on the West Coast before heading to Sydney over the weekend to promote The Heat. She touched down at the airport in Australia on Sunday and boarded a boat in Sydney Harbor this morning. Sandra has been hard at work on the film's press tour lately - she premiered the buddy cop flick in NYC alongside costar Melissa McCarthy last week, and we sat down with them to talk about their hilarious collaboration. Monday morning brought good news for the girls, as it was announced that the action-comedy took second place in its opening weekend after Disney-Pixar's Monsters University. View Slideshow › »

The Disney-Pixar animated prequel Monsters University remained box-office valedictorian in its second weekend, earning $46.1 million in first place. »

Ruthless targeting bears fruit

10 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Hollywood is reaping a decent harvest from a tight focus on broadly appealing fare – in spite of the gloomy predictions of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas about an 'implosion'

Boisterous summer box office continued to demonstrate the iron-clad credentials of broadly appealing studio fare as Monsters University held its top berth and the top five movies each grossed over $20m. Despite the recent gloomy prognostications of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, by the half-way point, blockbuster season 2013 has shown little sign of cracking up.

What is interesting about the remarks about an "implosion" by the moviemaking duo at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts in June is how, well, uninteresting they actually were. There was nothing in their dark predictions that any savvy industry watcher hadn't already accepted as inevitable.

There will come a time when several summer tentpoles will come crashing to earth within the space of several months. »

Does Buzz Not Matter In The Summer Of 2013?

11 hours ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx watched their dreams of a summer box office hit burn slowly to the ground, much like the Capitol Building the trailer for the movie they hoped would get them there, "White House Down." The $150 million buddy action movie came from blockbuster maker, director Roland Emmerich, and a script that Sony Pictures paid $3 million to acquire, and yet it couldn't stand up to returning films, "Monsters University" and "World War Z," and the new competition "The Heat," making only $25 million.

So how does a movie with all of that going for it and two leads coming off the biggest year of their careers fail at the same time a film like "World War Z," the Brad Pitt zombie fest that had nothing but bad buzz, crosses the $250 million mark at the global box office?

Weekend Box Office: America starting to respect, maybe even love its comically mismatched buddies

11 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Given the choice between two duos of hilariously mismatched size and sensibility, audiences gave the slight edge to Monsters University over The Heat this weekend, preferring to watch a bickering friendship blossom against the ivory walls of monster academia, rather than the far uglier streets of South Boston. Still, The Heat’s $40 million take was a much bigger victory than its second-place finish might suggest: Not only did its opening outpace Bridesmaids, it also beat out The Blind Side to become Sandra Bullock’s highest-opening film ever, reaffirming the film’s overarching lesson that Sandra Bullock should just loosen »

Box Office Breakdown: Monsters U Holds Off The Heat

12 hours ago | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

This past weekend at the box office saw a pair of new releases, but Pixar's Monsters University managed to hold them both at bay and retain the #1 spot.  Man of Steel has fallen back a little further, but is quickly approaching the $250 million domestic mark.  Come inside for the full breakdown.

Pixar shows that it's still the king (at least for one more weekend) by keeping the number 1 spot this past weekend at the box office.  The Heat wasn't able to top it, but that doesn't mean it didn't give some strong opposition.  Meanwhile just about everything else has dropped down a notch except for White House Down which was only able to pull in a 4th spot this weekend (not a great opening for a man who normally tops the charts).

Title Weekend Total 1.  Monsters University $46,180,000 $171 2.  The Heat $40,000,000 $40 3.  World War Z $29,800,000 $123.7 4.  White House Down $25,700,000 $25.7 5.  Man of Steel $20,820,000 $248.6 6.  This Is The End »

What Went Wrong?

14 hours ago | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"White House Down" is a flop, no matter how many fans of the film chastise the American public for not showing up. Roland Emmerich's latest feature was budgeted at a reported $150 million, but earned just $25.7 million at the box office this past weekend. That's a lower opening weekend tally than 2013 disasters like "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer" and "The Hangover Part III"; that's lower than the R-rated, similarly themed "Olympus Has Fallen"; that's just $200,000 more than "Battleship."

"We couldn't be more proud or supportive of the film Roland, Channing and Jamie created. This weekend's launch is just the beginning," a Sony spokesperson said to THR. "While 'White House Down' opened in a few smaller countries this weekend, it will not begin to open in major overseas territories until mid-July and it will continue to roll out overseas well into the fall."

That optimism aside, "White House Down »
