Obviously, everybody who is familiar with the Sleeping Beauty story, knows that it has some tragic moments, but I was still surprised about the filmmakers' approach here. The movie came out for Christmas 2009 and is obviously based on a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. Dieckmann and Getrost are not too experienced in terms of directing/writing, but Reich is. She worked on many films already that targeted younger audiences.

As always with these kind of films, the princess and her man of choice are not played by too famous characters, but the supporting cast is much more known: Hannelore Elsner, Anna Loos and Martin Feifel. Joseph Vilsmaier's daughter is in it as well shortly before she stopped making movies and began to lead a normal life. The Frog king early on was nicely done, but I was somehow missing the charm these films usually have. It was all so serious here. There were hardly no jokes at all and when i finally found one (a little boy telling the male hero to ask Sleeping Beauty if she has a younger sister), there is such dramatic soundtrack in the end which did not fit the mood of the situation at all. I am not saying this cannot work as a pure drama movie, but in this case it did not. Never edge-of-seat stuff for me. Many better Grimm adaptations out there (and probably also Sleeping beauty adaptations). Not recommended.
