In a two-picture deal with Inferno Entertainment, Entertainment One has picked up Canadian distribution rights to two movies produced by Australia's Omnilab Media -- the Jason Statham action pic The Killer Elite and the action drama Tomorrow When the War Began.

In Gary McKendry's Killer, Statham plays a former Navy Seal who reassembles his old team, which includes Robert De Niro, for a confrontation with a former Sas member, played by Clive Owen. The film is produced by Michael Boughen through Omnilab's Australian production arm, Ambience Entertainment, and Joni Sighvatsson. Exec producers are Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street, David Whealy, Peter D. Graves and Steve Chasman.

The top-grossing Australian film of 2010, Tomorrow, written and directed by Stuart Beattie and also produced by Boughen, concerns eight teens who find themselves in the middle of a war.

The deal was negotiated by eOne's Lara Thompson and Inferno's Kimberley Fox. »

Sydney -- Jason Statham has signed to star in new Australian action thriller, "The Killer Elite," which will be produced in Victoria this year, the state minister for Innovation Gavin Jennings announced Monday.

Based on the book "The Feather Men," by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the Aus$32 million ($29 million) feature will be helmed by Irish director Gary McKendry and produced by Australian company Omnilab Media, executive producers on "The Bank Job" which also starred Statham.

The film follows the activities of two secret organizations; The Clinic, consisting of three contract killers, and The Feather Men, an underground group of vigilante killers who protect former and present members of the Special Air Service (Sas) and their families.

"The makers of 'The Killer Elite' will spend at least $29 million and create approximately 250 jobs for Victorians, which is a significant boost to the State's economy," Jennings said.
