Sony Animation Goes Diverse with Miles Morales as Spider-Man and Lin-Manuel Miranda Musical ‘Vivo’

Sony Pictures Animation, which has fallen on hard times in recent years, highlighted diversity and female empowerment as part of its comeback at Wednesday’s slate preview in Culver City. The biggest news was confirmation that Miles Morales, the mixed race web-slinging teen (African-American and Hispanic), will star in the untitled “Spider-Man” feature coming December 21, 2018.

Morales, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli to succeed the late Peter Parker in the comics, has already become a TV animation staple on Disney Xd’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” (initially voiced by Donald Glover).

The animated “Spider-Man” marks a return to Spa for Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), who directed “The Lego Movie” and are currently making the “Han Solo” standalone “Star Wars” feature.

In a pre-recorded video message from London, Lord said, “What inspired us the most is that anyone can wear the mask. »

Tales From The Crypt TV revival delayed

Kirsten Howard Jan 16, 2017

A year on, M. Night Shyamalan is still struggling to bring back Tales From The Crypt. Here's why it's taking a while...

This time last year, M. Night Shyamalan - who, with The Visit and Split, is very much back - announced that he was reviving classic horror anthology show Tales From The Crypt for a brand new series at the TNT network. Fans were intrigued to find out exactly what Shyamalan would do with the spine-tingling project, but we've not heard much more about it since then.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with Kevin Reilly, Sarah Aubrey and the entire TNT team in this unique endeavor,” Shyamalan said back in January of last year. “To be part of such a beloved brand like Tales From The Crypt, something I grew up watching, »

M Night Shyamalan interview: Split, non-conformity, creative freedom

Writer-director M Night Shyamalan talks about his new film, Split, its making, themes and lots more...

Following the expensive Will Smith sci-fi vehicle After Earth in 2013, M Night Shyamalan returned two years later with lean, found-footage horror thriller, The Visit. Made for a tiny fraction of After Earth's investment, it marked something of a turning point for the writer-director: tense, quirky and at times blackly amusing, it was Shyamalan's lowest-budget film since the 90s, and also his most warmly received piece since 2002's Signs.

The partnership between Shyamalan and prolific indie producer Jason Blum - who's also taken such filmmakers as Barry Levinson, James DeMonaco and Damien Chazelle under his creative wing - is clearly an effective one, since the two have reunited for another movie, Split.

Metropolis at 90: the legacy of a pop modernist dystopia

Jim Knipfel Jan 17, 2017

We take a look back at the enduring legacy of the world’s first cinematic sci-fi epic, Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

In an interview with Peter Bogdanovich shortly before his death in 1976, Fritz Lang said of Metropolis, “You cannot make a social-conscious picture in which you say that the intermediary between the hand and the brain is the heart. I mean, that's a fairy tale – definitely. But I was very interested in machines. Anyway, I didn't like the picture – thought it was silly and stupid – then, when I saw the astronauts: what else are they but part of a machine? It's very hard to talk about pictures - should I say now that I like Metropolis because something I have seen in my imagination comes true, when I detested it after it was finished?”
