- Evan and Sarah are young lovers struggling to survive in an old cottage on a small island. Subsisting on what they can find and what they can steal on the nearby mainland, they try to escape from the restraints of everyday life and lose themselves in their passionate lovemaking - until an intruder intervenes.—Brian Strine
- "Beneath the River" is a penetrating study of human contrasts, self-imposed isolation, lif choices, and the many meanings of love. In this vision of human fallibility, Evan and Sarah, a young couple isolated at Sarah's family owned cottage on a small private island, are struggling to exist "off the grid" by committing petty robberies and spending their time making love and getting high. Evan, a troubled dreamer, fantasizes about a Utopian future living on a beach in Mexico. Sarah is drawn into his dream world as she rebels against cultural expectations. Time is irrelevant as the two pursue a reckless lifestyle to escape from the restraints and routine of everyday life. Pearl, an elderly woman from a neighboring island, intrudes on the couples escapist existence. Pearl challenges Evan's delusional idealism, confronts the couples anti-social lifestyle, and encourages Sarah to return home to a more traditional life. Feeling threatened, Evan's dark side emerges and Sarah begins to suspect that the situation is increasingly more insidious and dangerous. As Sarah begins to have doubts about her feelings for Evan and their relationship, she slowly withdraws, eventually leaving the couples island hideaway to return to the city and pursue a new life. Alone with his regrets, Evan is propelled into deep despair. Deeply in love and unable to cope, Evan embarks on a nihilistic journey both selfless and haunting.
