Alien meets Predator meets Star Trek? Hmm...
imdb-702-98681330 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert.

Going into this episode, I actually had the thought that maybe one of the essential crew would pull a Tasha Yar (die in this episode).

It's too bad it had to be the engineer, he was one of my favorite characters.

I kinda liked the creature chase stuff, as it pushed the borders of "what is Star Trek?" a little, though it was a mix of stuff I had already seen in Aliens vs. Predator.

Creatures with impossibly fast gestation periods... gah.

Plus, Gorn are supposed to have the ability to cooperate (build a civilization, have captains, etc.) and it seems like an unlikely jump to that from a chest burster.

But hey, it was certainly entertaining.

The Aliens movie called ...
codefool1 July 2022
This is a fairly decent episode that succeeds more from its fine direction and character development despite the obvious cribbing from the Alien franchise. We have the "Game over, man! Game over!" guy in Sam Kirk who isn't the pride of the family name in this episode, and a Newt stand-in. It's so on-the-nose it's shameful.

We also get our first "red shirt" in Lt. Duke, and a fairly impressive creature in "Buckley." Spock has his "Khan!" moment, and the Enterprise "miracle workers" who, with a small team, can manage to repair and raise a crashed star ship where the entire original crew couldn't.

There's also some budgeting in this episode, where the Enterprise sets are redressed as "damaged" to represent a vessel with only 90+ crew members. Given that last week's episode was also a set redress episode we can see that the budget is being stretched in the SNW production offices. It's franks and beans at the Craft Services wagons.

Despite all of this, the episode is extremely satisfying. The characters are easing into their roles and have toned up their performances.

This episode ushers in a lot of changes, which I cannot go into without spoilers. Since this is the penultimate episode of season 1, it will be interesting to see how the season finale plays out.

The highest praise I can give for a production is "I'm glad I watched it." And I watched this episode twice.

Unexpected.
WordsworthStone30 June 2022
I did not expect Star Trek to make a step into Space Horror--space is a given so...Survival Horror? This is a great example of refreshing serialized television. Most will say this is a recycled formula--they would be correct--however in a world where each episode resets a new call to adventure while still raising the stakes, this entry out of almost 900 episodes in the Trek universe is unique and fun to watch--no matter the sub-genre. If you're not happy about recycled tropes, you're watching the wrong universe. This universe has been around close to half a century--predating the ALIEN franchise by over a decade--the direct predecessors to space sci-fi, if not the authors of. I also like the direction the producers of the STU shows are taking in reducing episode counts to more precise storytelling. Modern times require modern formulas and now advertising dollars don't impact as much as paid subscribers, they have "refined" to more attention-grabbing episodes--be it original concepts, recycled tropes or nostalgia reminders.

Although weak in jump scares and a bit formulaic, the arcs and twists of the episode still surprised me. The third act resolution had emotional resonance and moved the overall story world forward, which works for a prequel developing lore. So let's stop comparing apples to apples and saying Discovery and Picard apples aren't apples anymore. You write an original science fiction series and we'll throw apples with our curse filled reviews.

This show continues to hit them outta the park.
darvin-230 June 2022
This episode had us on the edge of our seats and could be the best episode yet. I won't give anything away but damn, I cannot recall any Star Trek series hitting the ground running like this one. The character arks are impressive and they do what so many shows fail to do. You actually feel deeply about these people (or aliens as the case may be). And they are not afraid to pull at your heart strings.

What a great episode.

What a great show.

Only one left to go this season.

I could really do with more!!!

Best episode of Trek I have seen in a decade
confidential-6789730 June 2022
Basically Alien but with Star Trek uniforms, I can't speak highly enough of this episode. Not one you would watch with young children, which makes it even better. If you hate Discovery then you will LOVE this episode.

Here for it
markanthonypowell30 June 2022
I'm here for some horror Trek. The episode is a bit jumpy, plot wise. There is a lot going on in this episode, a lot of character development. I just hope the writers work on their pacing a bit. Going from 24 episodes in a typical season to 10-15 really messed with the flow of the story. A lot of the stuff is forced, and every main character this episode develops further, rather than just focusing on one or two for that growth.

I like it, but it takes away from the horror that could have been the main focus, with no arcs beyond it. I get that everyone has their own experience, and learns from that experience during such a hard, traumatic time, but take it easy, let's not get all Discovery on this show and cram so much in here that it becomes a s#!tshow.

This show just keeps on Rocking!! AGAIN!!!
dawsonc-5316130 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS!!!

First, I really liked the look of the planet - harkened back to the images of Talos 4 and how they evoked a sense of wonder to me back when I was 6 or 7. Whether the plan was to invoke that or not, it did. So right there that was enough for this 55+ yo Trekker to get hooked.

Then we go straight into horror motifs that are quite reminiscent of at two major sci-fi horror franchises. But even though they were quite blatant, still only hooked me further. And kept the quickly developing story going.

We are up against an old enemy, and we see it. It's truly scary. This sort of breaks canon, but then I think I can live with it. It was worth it.

But the real heart of the episode is what happens after the crisis is resolved and this had me quite literally bawling out loud. I'm not going to describe. But the adventure continues . . . Keep on Trekkin' !!!!

Ignore the cynicism, this is good
phoenix-caner30 June 2022
Yes, the story is not exactly unique. But that is both very naive and ignorant observation.

We literally produced hundreds of thousands of stories in different media since we figured out how to use radio waves for communication, and it is inevitable that we run out of truly unique stuff at some point.

Whatever the franchise is, you cant expect the same kind of unique awe from the second or third experience. Seeing a plane flying for the very first time is an unique experience, but do you expect the same reaction second time?

So, it is pointless to be too harsh, this is a good story. It fits canon, and it is believable. Don't forget, all the train wrecks we get in any franchise is due to that fixation on being unique. It doesn't work when you force it.

So embrace what you get, give them time. And if we are lucky, they will come up with something unique. Otherwise, we get nothing.

Alien vs. Predator: Strange New Worlds
slak96u30 June 2022
Considering how awful the previous two episodes were, this one was fantastic. Decent hour of television paying homage to previous films series, with Trek flair. Love how Hemmer and Uhuras storylines come together, it gives Uhura satisfying back story.

Again, with how bad the last two episodes were, it's nice to get a simple and even story. This season has been a roller-coaster, but I enjoyed not having agenda shoved down my throat.

Where is Ripley?
christianschumann16 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Overall a mediocre entry in a great first season!

What I liked:
  • showing that Uhura is not the only cadet on rotatation, and other ensins we don't even know get promote
  • a bit more Hemmer, but not much
  • the unknown alien
  • the Hemmer Uhura Connection

Undecided:
  • Look, I love how fast I got to know this crew, something the other new shows didn't pull off after 4 seasons, or 2 seasons in a case where I grew up with the main character, but havin the briefing while cleaning dishes is a bit to much. I love the chemistry, but a bit more professional distance would be fine. Maybe I am to much influenced by TNG, and less TOS.

  • Lt. Kirk... still not much on him, but he is there... Somehow. Oh yeah, he is there to place a counter point to Spock
  • the whole La'an - Gorn story - parent background and all

Didn't like:
  • reusing a Connie but calling it something else, was ok in the past, but not with today's tech.

  • blunt copying from Alien, not just Inspiration. They even copy the fact that the Host influences the development of the hatchling. Oh and killing them with low temps... Alien 3 / T2
  • oh, and they have kind of predator abilities, of course
  • I am not watching Star trek for cheap space horror
  • Spocks battle cry, his outragr at the end
  • killing off Hemmer, a great but criminally underdeveloped character.

It was obvious from Ep 1 that they would develop the Gorn in this direction. I don't like it, it is cheap and not close to what I thougt of the Gorn. Although implemented ok, it was just a greatest hit of Alien/Terminator/Predator. Even Hemmers sacrifice just felt like a copy from Alien 3 or T2. Don't like the fact that they want to turn around the one Character who hasn' too much emotions... ButI like the idea la'an leaves, she worked the least for me.

I am kind of surprised this one was rated so good. It was the weakest ep for me, because its ideas were so weak and just a blunt copy, and because they killed if one of the best charakters without good reason, I guess for the drama.

So...show runners decide to kill off a fan favourite...my favourite...AND an alien. And I LOVED this series AND this episode up until that moment. Now now I'm done. I'm tired of shows taking away my favourite character. You don't have to find this "review" helpful or not. Doesn't matter.

I expected More from the reveal of the Gorn
skip-987562 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In general ,Im really loving this show so this is more of a pet peeve regarding their depiction of the Gorn species. I guess you could say spoilers although its a given that this episode will be about the Gorn... I was Really hoping they would be depicted as meancing, towering ,beasts that looked like raptors or perhaps even a small T rex but what we got were bug eyed versions of what looked like an overgrown frog...Sure, the were carnivorous but Fierce? No not at all.

With all the beautiful CGI effects on the show, this was seriously Underwhelming...Granted these were not fully grown, but still, it looked like a big frog!... My other pet peeve is with the Doctor, who seems to always sound like he's both whispering and constipated..I like the actor and he;s doing a fine job in the role, but comeon brother, speak Up and articulate so people can hear you... Enough ranting, this IS a great show overall, there are always strong and weak episodes in any series and this one has mostly very good writing and acting...Maybe we will see the Full grown Gorn in future eps...This show has some stiff competition from The orville ,which has superbly written eps , every bit as good as anything from this series.

Several Major Star Trek Flaws
ejrlogins6 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The overall plot was ok if it wasn't for several major Star Trek and behavioral flaws. The Gorn looked totally wrong. Also, they moved wrong. They are supposed to be much slower, as shown in Arena. Yes, I know the Gorn in Enterprise moved faster, but still. Also, how can the Gorn become a technological species if they fight each other for dominance out of the womb until there is only one left. The other ship that went down on the planet was too big to land. In the prime universe it is well established that Constitution class starships can't land. In fact, that is why Rodenberry came up with the transporters, to avoid any landing of the ship. Having that ship look just like the Enterprise also made no sense. They could have redressed the interior sets and just said it had a lot of common parts. Lastly, I disliked the death of Hemmer, who I really liked.

The only way out of this for me is to assume that this whole show is set in yet another parallel universe. It is also possible we'll find out that these are not actually the Gorn but some species that are Gorn-adjacent and mistaken for the Gorn.

Ignore the critics, they are boring and no real Star Trek fans.
r-westheim30 June 2022
This was one of the best episode of Strange New Worlds, I'm getting so tired of those people criticizing everything. They whine and complain about everything, even if it's just a piece that's wrong or the jacket doesn't fit right. Stop with that nonsense and just look elsewhere. The cast is perfect, the chemistry between each other is great.

Too bad the Season is only so short at 10 episodes.

Outstanding episode
mikeawalsh1 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Classic, tense, SiFi episode against a little known foe. There's character development aplenty, an emotional rollercoaster to ride, and all whilst maintaining TOS canon! Well, mostly (the Gorn are a lot quicker than they used to be!) Another outstanding episode of true Trek. Can hardly wait for the next episode. Will a familiar friend be joining engineering? I hope so. Och Aye!

Simpsons did it!!!
bnevs181 July 2022
That (as opposed to the typical "woke" argument) is what the dissenters are saying about this. And yes, it borrows heavily on previous works, but at this point in human society, pretty much everything does.

I always find it enlightening to read some of the people who have a different opinion on the episode (not the 'senior trekker' who obviously noone likes here and doesnt even care enough to give a proper rating, but someone who actually posits arguments). It was nice to see some horror in NuTrek (the Icheb scene from Picard wasnt horror, it was pure shock gore crap), and I dont even like horror. But this was well done (and the baby gorn offing each other was great).

Normally, Im a big continuity person, but I am willing to let the Gorn of "Arena" fall by the wayside and think they could make the Gorn the primary antagonist of SNW. After all, they retconned the Klingons in order to introduce great stories.

Again, im far too jaded by Disco and Picard to not believe they will squander this show as well, but so far its been a good ride...

Definitely not Star Trek
S3pt3m63r3 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was entertaining but totally wrong. The depiction of Spock being an illogical Vulcan/Human hybrid not in control of his emotions is not how he would have been at this time. Uhura didn't serve with Pike and only came on the Enterprise during Kirks command. If she had she would have been more prepared in Arena.

The depiction of the Gorn as alien chest busters doesn't tally with what we know of them already, which is mainly from Arena. They are portrayed as cold blooded reptiles that destroyed the federation outposts. The whole version of the gorn being portrayed in SNW doesn't tie in with the Original Series as they don't use the human colonists to propagate their young. They are simply protecting their territory. Kirk assumes that they intend invasion but doesn't know he is engaging the gorn. It's the humans who are the aggressors.

In Arena, the gorn are portrayed as strong and intelligent, but wholly reptilian. They do not have any interest in capturing other races for means of propagation. As an aside Uhura is communications officer, and the actor who played Captain Pike in wheelchair is on the bridge sat next to Sulu at the helm.

The SNW writers are playing fast and lose with the gorn, who are underdeveloped as a species, but there's no indication in this episode they have these characteristics and this isn't Star Trek.

This is a good episode but .. !#!.. ????
batmanforever-9324930 June 2022
I liked the episode ,even if the Gorn are different from the other series, because the other new shows are not very well received by our community , and i would like this to be a remake or anything else , instead of being only a continuation to Discovery, but if they wanted to make space for other characters they should have picked up the Khan girl or the punk girl who looks like that girl from Alien who thought she is better than Ripley and not a character who is loved by everybody, but i do get it ,i think it was a tough choice for the actor to play his role, but i still believe this was a wrong move , A VERY WRONG ONE ! Anyway, somebody should tell the actor what a strong impact he had for the franchise and for the fans and how much will miss him.

Best episode yet
quofan30 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You just knew we were going to hear from the Gorn again, and boy did they deliver in this episode. This might be one of my favorite Star Trek episodes ever. Very suspenseful, atmospheric and what a terrifying enemy these Gorn are. They are as intelligent and cunning as they are horrible and bloodthirsty. Oh, and all of you comparing it to Alien and Predator, yeah I agree, and I don't see anything wrong with that. An enemy that combines those 2 races is one formidable enemy. I so look forward to the Federation giving some payback to these Gorn, which I hope we see next season. A tough episode for the Enterprise crew and their fans too.

I didn't want to be the one to ruin it, but plenty of others have
Ulfman50002 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, it's Alien and Predator vs Star Trek.

Was it "poorly executed"? Was the "plot incomprehensible"? ... What did these people just watch?

It was a highly competent homage. It was a Star Trek episode you've never really seen the likes of. The plot was simple; I don't know what's not to get. They see a problem, think it's gonna be an easy fix, they go down, and it's a horror movie. Cool. Fine.

I didn't think it was all that deep, or even meant to be. I don't think they spent all that much time fleshing out characters, but they did a little. That's fine. That's a good thing.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the "alternate reality" or "excuse to wear costumes" episodes like we had the previous episode. They've always done those episodes, since TOS, and they're always corny.

And I'd seen someone complain about the Gorn not being the Gorn from TOS? The whole point of the Gorn in TOS was that it was supposed to be the ultimate killing machine and it was one of the worst fights in history, so they're trying to rehab the Gorn's image as being what it was supposed to be. Fine by me.

Great episode, the most Trek Trek show in years (I don't hate Discovery, but it's not as good as this), and I'm loving it.

A solid but derivative episode full of bad dialogue.
simianfriday30 June 2022
This was a decent but *very* derivative episode with a lot of cringey dialogue throughout. The charitable way to put it is to say the episode is a "love letter" to the Alien franchise - the more cynical way to put it is to say the episode is a blatant rip-off of the Alien franchise. This is so similar to Alien/Aliens that I think it steps over the line between homage and plagiarism for me.

I think the best part about this episode are going to be the toxic fan reactions to the fate of a particular character though. I'm looking forward to that, I have to admit.

Strong Story!
sparklefish1 July 2022
I was super engaged in this episode and the hour flew by quickly! I wish every episode of everything I ever watch was this compelling!

All the characters were strong, the emotion was palpable without being overdone, and the Gorn were really scary!

Buckley was very interesting to look at, too.

The storyline was full of surprises and the suspense had me at the edge of my seat.

I was definitely moved and got a lump in my throat at the end.

Thank you, writers, directors, effects, actors, and everyone involved for this fantastic episode!

Entertaining with Stolen Plot Points
Dac332730 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It actually is enjoyable to watch, however I couldn't get past the stolen ideas from several movies such as the Alien and Predator franchises and they weren't even subtle about it. Very obvious!

It would have been a great episode, but it seems the writing is on an adolescent level this time around. I'm not completely disappointed. It had a lot of heart in some areas.

If it had a unique take on it, I would have given it at least a 9! Considering what has transpired, It is about a 6. Better luck next time I suppose.

What a shame. It had a lot of potential.

All Those Who Wander
Prismark102 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Enterprise is ordered to go on a priority mission. Another starship has become unresponsive. When the crew arrive it turns into a bug hunt.

For Pike it also leads to insurmountable losses, devastation caused by Gorn eggs.

Star Trek does Alien and it is so on the nose. I'll put this down as paying tribute to Ridley Scott.

I would not have minded if this was inspired by Alien and then went on to do its own thing with a Star Trek twist.

Unfortunately this was a carbon copy of the various Alien movies. I thought at one point that a submitted episode was junked and writers had 30 minutes to come up with another idea.
