Frankie mentions that Axl only knows a lot about astronomy because he watched Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) a lot. Charlie McDermott (Axl) played Chaz in the movie.
A house is constantly shown to the left, across the street, from the Heck's home. This is the set house used in Bewitched. To the right of the Heck's home is the house used for "The Partridge Family".
The original pilot episode starred Ricki Lake as Frankie Heck. Most of the cast was replaced after that production, with Atticus Shaffer (Brick) being the only actor remaining.
The character Brick, played by Atticus Shaffer, is rumored to have Asperger syndrome or some sort of autism. He also possesses eidetic memory. He also has osteogenesis imperfecta type 2 which causes him to break his bones easily.
Doris Roberts, who played Brick's Teacher Ms Rinsky during the second season, had earlier co-starred with Patricia Heaton on Everybody Loves Raymond.
Mike gets caught singing Boston's "More Than a Feeling" in the car. In Scrubs, Neil Flynn's character "The Janitor" is part of an air band that plays a version of the same Boston hit.
Patricia Heaton formerly starred in Everybody Loves Raymond. Her husband from that series Ray Romano guest starred in a flashback episode
The town of Orson, Indiana is fictional, but based on the real life Indiana town of Jasper.
Marsha Mason who plays Frankie's mother, played Paula McFadden in The Goodbye Girl (1977). In an updated version of the movie - The Goodbye Girl (2004) - Patricia Heaton plays the same character.
Sue's birthday is actually inaccurate. She was born on Leap Day, February 29th, which only occurs once every 4 years. To fit her age group and Leap Day, she would've had to have been born in 1996, a leap year. However, this is not the case. Sue celebrated her 16th birthday in 2013, meaning she would have had to have been born in 1997, making her birthday incorrect.
The family visits a local attraction called Brown County which exists in real life in Indiana.
Greer Grammar, who plays Axl's love interest April, is the daughter of Kelsey Grammar. Patricia Heaton had earlier costarred with Kelsey Grammar on the TV series Back To You.

Frankie (Patrica Heaton) and Mike (Neil Flynn) are both Irish American
Sue's birthday is mentioned several time as being the 29th of February, which is the Leap Year Day. However, this is impossible. Sue graduated High School in 2015, which - with a February birthday - means she would have had to have been born in 1997. As the Leap Year occurs only ever 4 years, and each year is a multiple of 4, the closest Leap Years to Sue's birth would have been 1996 and 2000, which would mean that in 2015 she would have turned either 19 or 15 respectively. There was also no mention of Sue's birthday in s.7, despite 2016 being a Leap Year, though she is referenced as being 19 years old in s.7 ep.18 which first aired in March, meaning she has celebrated her birthday already.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

In Season 6 Episode 21, "Two of a Kind", Frankie's father Tag (Jerry Van Dyke) visits the Heck house to meet up with his brother Dutch (Dick Van Dyke). The two men are brothers in reality, too.
Episode 13 of season 3, "The Map," is an episode about Aunt Ginny's funeral. This episode was done because the actress who played Aunt Ginny, Frances Bay, had actually passed away.
