Early Pilot Buzz: What’s Heating Up for the 2017-2018 TV Season?

28 April 2017 1:45 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With Upfronts still more than two weeks away, it’s still early in the decision-making process, but as the current broadcast season winds down, television executives are beginning to form opinions on the pilots in contention for their network’s 2017-2018 slate.

As always, a handful of projects are rising as early frontrunners, while others have not impressed with their first cuts and are in need of re-shoots and re-tooling. No stark trends have emerged across the broadcast networks, though there are a number of military-themed dramas, many female-led comedies and lighter one-hours in the works. In contrast to the past few pilot seasons, reboots are not as hot this year, though there are a few, such as the CW’s “Dynasty,” “S.W.A.T.” at CBS and “What About Barb” at NBC.

Of course, television executives and writers are all on edge with a possible WGA strike on the horizon, but »

Anika Noni Rose Options Rights to Best-Selling Ya Series “Shadowshaper”

27 April 2017 9:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Anika Noni Rose in “The Good Wife”: CBS

Anika Noni Rose is working on taking “Shadowshaper” from the page to the screen. The Tony winner — and her production company, Roaring Virgin Productions — have purchased the film and TV rights for Daniel José Older’s best-selling Ya fantasy series, Deadline reports.

Published in 2015 and named a New York Times Notable Book of the year, “Shadowshaper” introduces Sierra Santiago, “who lives in Brooklyn and discovers shadowshaping, a magic that infuses ancestral spirits into paintings, music, and stories,” the source summarizes. “But someone is killing the shadowshapers one by one — and the killer believes Sierra is hiding their greatest secret.” The second installment of the Shadowshaper Cypher series, “Shadowhouse Fall,” is slated to hit shelves this September.

In a statement, Rose emphasized the significance of “Shadowshaper’s” protagonist and story. “‘Shadowshaper’ was a book I couldn’t put down. At a time when so many are feeling powerless, Sierra Santiago is a young Afro-Latina heroine who finds her power within herself,” she said. “Through a strong spiritual connection to her ancestors, the discovery of the magic living in her art, and with the help of some amazing friends, she saves her family, and her Brooklyn neighborhood from certain destruction. A face and culture we rarely see on screen; she is the heroine we’ve been searching for, only to find she lives right next door.”

Rose is clearly a big fan of Older’s writing. In 2015, she optioned the film and TV rights to “Bone Street Rumba,” Older’s urban fantasy book series. “Half-Resurrection Blues,” the first book in the series, focuses on Carlos Delacruz, an in-betweener existing somewhere between life and death and serving as an agent in the New York Council of the Dead.

The former “Good Wife” actress is attached to produce and star in a film based on Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress, and the first woman ever to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

Rose won a Tony for her performance in “Caroline, Or Change.” She currently toplines “The Quad,” a Bet series about the newly elected President of a fictional university.

Bates Motel,” “Private Practice,” and “Dreamgirls” are among Rose’s previous acting credits. She voiced Princess Tiana in Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog.”

Anika Noni Rose Options Rights to Best-Selling Ya Series “Shadowshaper” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »

The streaming revolution has been a relatively simple one so far: if you had Netflix and Amazon, that would cover your bases for most of the big shows and movies out there eventually. ‘Your Honor’ Tops 2017’s Series Mania

22 April 2017 2:46 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Already snapped up for a U.S. remake deal, Israeli series “Your Honor,” created by Shlomo Mashiach and Ron Ninio, took the top Grand Jury Prize on Saturday night in Paris at the 8th Series Mania, whose vibrance

was a telling reminder of the robust good health enjoyed by scripted show production at large.

“This is truly a new golden age of television and it was one of the highlights of my life to celebrate it by being on the jury for Series Mania, said jury president Damon Lindelof, show runner of “The Leftovers” and “Lost.”

Few who attended Series Mania could not have been struck by the bullishness of its industry events. FremantleMedia, eOne, Zdf and Federation Entertainment all announcing new productions or desired expansive moves and Co-Production Forum attendance up about 110% to just over 900 delegates as the market for foreign – and often foreign-language – TV dramas, though usually still niche in the latter case, continues »

Paris — Julianna Margulies was in Paris this week as a key note speaker at the 8th Series Mania.

She wasn’t pulling any punches in talking politics and was quick to defend the arts, advocate for victims of gun violence, and take a swing at the White House.

On protecting the arts: “What we have to remember is that what we are left with, our history as a people, is the arts. It’s so important in America now with the threat of arts funding being cut.”

She was cautious concerning what the future may bring. “Journalists are having to raise money to get paid to report truthfully. This is a frightening moment where our core values as human beings are being challenged.”

It was not all gloom and doom, however, as the actress noted that this is also a time of opportunity. “The beauty is the energy it’s created to overcome that. We »

Everyone knew.

Everyone was guilty.

On The Good Fight Season 1 Episode 10 we found out who was responsible for the ponzi scheme and someone was finally arrested.

The finale focused primarily on Maia.

Her attempt to assert herself at work; her growing friendship with Lucca; and her reaction to finding out her dad was guilty.

By the way, spoiler alert! Henry admitted he was responsible for the ponzi scheme. Actually, he said everyone was.

Henry: I'm guilty. I did it.

Maia: No, Jax did.

Henry: Yes, and I did it too and your mom and everyone. Everyone knew. We paid off the SEC. We paid off anyone who got suspicious.

What’s next for The Good Fight?

CBS All Access’ first scripted series wrapped its first season on Sunday with a jam-packed finale that left several looming questions unanswered. ‘The Good Fight’ Finale: Robert & Michelle King Talk Law, Disorder and Plans for Season 2 (Spoilers)

“There’s a whole lot of people who want to see this country fail, Diane,” Adrian Boseman tells Diane Lockhart in the season finale of “The Good Fight.”

Spoiler alert: Do not read until you’ve watch the season finale of “The Good Fight,” titled “Chaos.”

The spinoff of “The Good Wife” concludes its first season with a strong episode, “Chaos,” that does a good job of capturing the unsettled, post-election moment. Protesters are screaming in the streets, hackers are running amok, fake news is pervasive, Internet trolls are malicious and government is overtaxed at best and corrupt at worst.

“It feels like something’s come detached — like a piece of machinery that doesn’t sound right,” Boseman says.

In this environment, it’s a gift to have “Good Fight” to pick up the mantle of its predecessor and offer an entertaining and thought-provoking weekly look at defense lawyers who are basically trying to do the right »
