Parents Guide for
"Modern Family" (2009) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

4/10

There is some sexual content in the show, but most of it is just humorous references to sex and similar subjects.

Season one, episode 14 ("Moon Landing"): two men's backsides accidentally touch in a gym locker room. Buttocks are blurred out.

Season two, episode 13 ("Caught in the Act"): three people who are all siblings catch their parents having sex. No nudity, but there are instances of non-graphic sexual dialogue all throughout the episode, since it's the main plot.

Season four, episode 11 ("New Year's Eve"): a man and a woman are about to have sex in a hot spring, no nudity. Then several nudists come to the lake (censors are used to cover up most stuff) to celebrate "Nude Year's Eve."

Two characters are gay and there are double entendre's about that (would fly over young children's heads)

Little to moderate sexual dialogue okay to children over the age of 12

Violence & Gore

1/10

All violence, if there is any, is played for laughs and does not result in serious injury to the characters.

Profanity

3.5

For the most part, the language is relatively mild, with words such as "Hell", "Damn", "Ass" and "Bitch" being used infrequently. in one episode, there are few bleeped out f-bombs used by a very young girl.

3/10

In some episodes, characters get drunk, including a teenage girl. She does learn a valuable lesson from this experience however.

One episode focuses on Claire's fear that her son, Luke is smoking marijuana. It turns out that he isn't and he was just shooting a film and that Claire and Phil were misunderstanding his directions, thinking them to be diverts. In the same episode, it's implied that Haley has smoked marijuana.

Modern Family is a great show with lots of humour and quality. Perhaps the only reason why it's not for all audiences though is because it addresses some serious topics such as homosexuality, adoption and sex. That said, each episode usually ends with an important message that many viewers may find very meaningful.

The episode "Undeck the Halls" features Manny and Jay watching Miracle on 34th Street. As a prank, Manny shows Jay a version with a "screamer". While watching the film, a monster-esque face pops up, suddenly.

Suggested MPAA rating: PG-13 for some sexual humor and mild language. Recommended for 12 and up.
