Let Adele Be Adele: How Her NBC Concert Left Such an Impact (and Could Snag an Emmy)

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Even non-music fans can appreciate the talent and personality on display at most concerts. That’s especially true with an artist like Adele, whose live performances are where she truly shines brightest. It’s an experience that audiences beyond just a stadium full of ticket holders ought to be able to enjoy.

Re-creating that live concert experience was the challenge facing the producers and director of “Adele: Live In New York City.” The one-off special, which was filmed at Radio City Music Hall on Nov. 17 and broadcast by NBC on Dec. 14, ultimately received four Emmy nominations. Give credit to director Beth McCarthy-Miller, who treated “Adele: Live” like the concert event it was and not just another TV special.

Emmys 2016: ‘Steven Universe’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers’ Show Off Animation’s Softer Side

24 August 2016 12:46 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

From opening theme to closing credits, “The Answer” is eleven minutes—but as with most episodes of “Steven Universe,” its emotional reach seems infinite. Even the title card is immaculate, clothes on the line and leaves in the trees rustling under a midnight moon. In the Emmy-nominated Short Form Animated Series, the most ravishing approach to the art form currently on television, each frame, ant-like, carries many times its own weight, and together the images foster a kind of communal spirit. Down to the frogs and fireflies in an untouched forest, or the fusion of two characters into one, in “The Answer” “Steven Universe” reaffirms its faith in the additive power of cooperation, a children’s series with potent insights for adults.

Emmy Awards’ Diversity Boom Reflects America

23 August 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

Viola Davis’ stirring remarks at last year’s Emmy ceremony are resonating again as the industry prepares to hand out this year’s trophies.

The 2016 nominees rep the most diverse field of above-the-line talent assembled in the 68-year history of the kudos, and the smiling faces on ABC’s live telecast will look more like America than ever before. Davis broke ground last year as the first African-American actress to win for lead actress in a drama series, for her tour de force work on ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.”

Among the milestones this year are Kenya Barris becoming the first solo African-American series creator to be nominated for comedy series (Bill Cosby won as co-creator of “The Cosby Show” with Ed. Weinberger and Michael Leeson in 1985), as well »

Four Problem Areas the Emmy Awards Need to Fix

23 August 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When this year’s Emmy nominations were announced, it was tempting to hand the TV Academy the honor of “most improved awards organization.”

Sure, there were some quibbles here and there about notable “snubs,” but reactions to the noms were generally positive. Credit the recognition for new shows (“Master of None,” “Mr. Robot”) and overdue veterans (“The Americans”), a racially diverse line-up of nominees that puts the Oscars to shame, and overall goodwill toward the season’s top contenders. We knew the razzle-dazzle of “Game of Thrones” would land the most noms yet again, but who can complain about “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and “Fargo” following right behind?

As TV grows in prestige and power —  and continues to come into its own as a true art form —  so do the Emmys. And while the Academy has done a solid job of living up to that responsibility, it’s worth considering a few areas that could make »

Another day, another smiley outing by Jennifer Garner. On Saturday, the Nine Lives actress looked as happy as can be after leaving the gym with a friend. Clad in a raglan baseball tee and leggings, Jennifer took advantage of the sunny weather and grabbed an iced coffee drink before making her way back to her car. Second Opinion – David Brent: Life on the Road (2016)

David Brent: Life on the Road, 2016.

Written and Directed by Ricky Gervais.

Starring Ricky Gervais, Jo Hartley, Ben Bailey Smith, Tom Basden, Tom Bennett, Mandeep Dhillon and Abbey Murphy.

Synopsis:

A camera crew catches up with David Brent, the former star of the fictional British series, “The Office” as he now fancies himself a rockstar on the road.

The Office was one of the most successful British comedies of the last twenty years. Its influence can be seen in cringe-coms like Curb Your Enthusiam and documentary-style shows such as Modern Family and, of course, the incredibly popular American remake. It was also one of those very rare shows that didn’t outstay its welcome and went out with a perfect finale. The prospect of that ending being tarnished by a big-screen spin-off set 13 years later made this particular fan quite nervous, but two minutes into the film I was laughing »
