Scott’s Los Angeles Film Festival Dispatch, Part One

15 June 2016 2:00 PM, PDT | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

Independent cinema is the clear focus at La Film Fest. This doesn’t mean they’re completely clear of the sort of pre-packaged, studio-lite fare that tends to climb awards-season ladders into our multiplexes – this year’s festival featured films starring Chris Messina, Idris Elba, Alfred Molina, Gemma Arterton, Gael Garcia Bernal, Gillian Jacobs, and Topher Grace, plus The Conjuring 2, an outright studio film. And even those films without such attachments are not entirely free from the influence, following familiar beats and a sort of glossy presentation in an attempt to “fit in” with the big boys. The extent to which these films could truly be called “independent” is thus debatable, and lends a sort of discomfort to aligning them with truly adventurous voices. That disparity is most evident in four thrillers that played at the festival, which range from practically begging to be let in to actively refusing any sense of acceptance. »

BrainDead Review: Good Wife Creators' D.C. Satire Will Make Your Head Ache

Here’s something troubling about BrainDead, CBS’ new political dramedy from The Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King: After watching three hour-long episodes, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be upset in the slightest if any of the central characters fell victim to the alien bugs feasting on the brains of Washington, D.C., power players and turning ’em all into deeply uncompromising, rabidly partisan monsters.

Batman v Superman cinematographer says Ultimate Edition won’t sway the haters

Yesterday Warner Bros. released a trailer for the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, an extended R-rated cut of this year’s divisive DC superhero team-up, which will include an additional thirty minutes of footage.

If you were disappointed by the theatrical cut and have been hoping the Ultimate Edition might fix any issues you had with the film, that’s probably not going to be the case – at least according to cinematographer Larry Fong, who has taken to Twitter to say that it’s unlikely to sway any haters…

Aquaman’s James Wan gives his thoughts on the critical backlash to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

2 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It was a film that critics hated and certainly left a bad taste in many movie goer’s mouths, but everyone had an opinion on Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Over the weekend we heard from Jeremy Irons – who wasn’t a fan – and now Aquaman director James Wan has given his thoughts.

“I think it’s a world that is so difficult to control, and always expectations of fans are out of this world, right? No pun intended,” he told Bad Taste when asked about the critical and fan backlash. “I know how hard it is, from making Conjuring 2, how much anticipation there is just from the first movie. I think you do the best you can, and tell the best story you can.”

Wan mentions that Snyder is “being very respectful” with the character with regards to his appearance in Justice League.

Russell Crowe says Warner Bros. originally planned “a number of Superman movies” before Batman v Superman

1 June 2016 9:10 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During an interview with Digital Spy to promote his new movie The Nice Guys, Russell Crowe has revealed that Warner Bros. originally intending on making a number of sequels to Man of Steel before The Dark Knight came along and scuppered those plans.

“Originally — I could be completely wrong — I think there was a number of Superman movies,” said Crowe when asked if there was any talk of him reprising the role of Jor-El for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. “But I think they made the decision to jump past those and go to the idea of Batman and Superman in the same film. So, no, I didn’t have any discussions about that at all.”

As yet, there’s been no official word on a Man of Steel sequel (although we have had plenty of rumours), so at the moment it’s unclear what the future holds for »

Jeremy Irons says Batman v Superman was “overstuffed” and “very muddled”

29 May 2016 11:13 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It’s probably pretty safe to say that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn’t the rip-roaring success that Warner Bros. wanted to kickstart its DC Extended Universe. The film took a bashing from critics, as well as a large section of fans, and it seems that Alfred Pennyworth actor Jeremy Irons shares many of the same complaints.

“Deservedly so,” said Irons, when talking to The Daily Mail about the film’s negative reviews. “I mean it took $800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed. It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”

It’s likely that Irons is referring to Justice League when he mentions “the next one”, given that he’s returning as Alfred, although he could also be referring to the solo Batman movie, where »
