Shiri Appleby (Cate) and Britt Robertson (Lux) became very close friends during the run of the show and in fact lived together for some time.
Nina Dobrev auditioned for the role of Lux, but network wanted her to stay with her role on The Vampire Diaries (2009).
Ksenia Solo's (Tasha) real life mother, plays her on screen mother (Cynthia).
Based on the actresses real ages, Cate (Shiri Appleby) would have been 11 when she had Lux (Britt Robertson).
Every episode title mimics the series title format by consisting of two words and with at least: the second word in past tense, and, often also with a prefix, for example: Home INspectED, Rent UNcollectED, Formal REformED, Family TherapizED, Storm WeatherED.
Cate and Lux are only 11 years apart in real life

The pilot was filmed under the title 'Light Years' (the name Lux means light), then changed to 'Parental Discretion Advised', then finally changed to 'Life Unexpected'.

Creator Liz Tigelaar had previously used the name Lux in a pilot she had written that was never greenlit, so decided to use it for this show. Tigelaar had come across the name while reading the novel 'The Virgin Suicides' by Jeffrey Eugenides.
