Review: ‘Fist Fight’ is Mindless, Crude, and Thoroughly Funny

16 February 2017 9:50 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It’s hard to believe that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been on the air for twelve years now, but it’s still going strong. While the show opened doors for the entire quartet of relative unknowns, Charlie Day has been the one who’s leveraged his rising star into a pretty prolific film career, generally as the confused, manic comic relief. He fills that role on the show too, albeit at a level of imbecilic illiteracy that’s hard to fathom without watching yourself. But in 2015, ten years after the comedy’s debut, a different side of Charlie was shown. The episode was “Charlie Work” and it allowed Day to flip that energy into no-nonsense frustration and uncharacteristic productivity. He was confident, assertive, and coherent—and funnier as a result.

I wonder if it was fate then that Day would sign onto Fist Fight four months after »

Like it or lump it, Valentine’s Day is upon us – and there’s Love in the air.

And we’re not talking about the sickeningly sentimental, schmaltzy kind that’s no doubt populating your various social feeds; instead, we’re referring to the Netflix original series that struck a chord with subscribers last year with a refreshingly frank, down-to-earth look at romance in the 21st century. Told through the lens of Mickey and Gus – Community‘s Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust, respectively – Love chronicles the unlikely romance that blossoms when a self-confessed sex addict (Mickey) crosses paths with an aspiring screenwriter named Gus. It’s a dynamic that brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘it’s complicated’ and up above you’ll find the very first trailer for Love season 2, which arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Fantasy Fridays: Scully & Mfr Cast Masters Of The Universe!!

10 February 2017 11:08 AM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

We'd like to forget all about the last attempt at a live-action Masters of The Universe movie. Sorry, Dolph! Great hair, though.

Welcome back to another edition of Fantasy Fridays, where two real-life best friends (Jeremy Scully and I, Mario-Francisco Robles) get together to cast/pitch our dream movies.

In the past, we've tackled everything from The Batman to the Universal Monsters.

This week, we turn our attention towards the long-gestating cinematic reboot of Masters of The Universe. Jeremy and I grew up on the classic 80s cartoon, and I had a ton of the old action figures. Yet even we knew, as children, that the 1987 movie starring Dolph Lundgren was crap. That's why we'd like to put our own spin on what the reboot should look/feel like.

Over the years, many filmmakers and various studios have tried and failed to get a Masters of The Universe movie off of the ground. »

The movie, TV show, cartoon and comic references of The Lego Batman Movie...

This article contains major The Lego Batman Movie spoilers.

Holy plastic building blocks, Batman! Almost everything really was awesome about The Lego Batman Movie. After years of dark nights and grim glares at other superheroes, the newest adventure of the Caped Crusader, as voiced by Will Arnett’s perfectly overdone gravel, was a breath of fresh air. Not afraid to let Batman’s sidekicks have fun - even if our cantankerous main guy still prefers to wear only black and sing about “darkness” - The Lego Batman Movie is poised to entertain Bat-fans of all Bat-ages.

Still one of its best gags is its shameless (and relentless) use of references, cutaways, and in-jokes to overstuff its narrative with more meta-humor than the most unwieldy episode of Community. As a consequence, it’s easy to »

‘Mr. Gaga’ Review: A Lyrical Portrait of Visionary Choreographer Ohad Naharin

“If someone can hypnotize you with only a row, then that person is a genius,” says Israeli dancer Yossi Yungman, recalling wistfully the first time he saw an Ohad Naharin piece. By the end of “Mr. Gaga,” a new documentary about Naharin from Tomer Heymann, even the most dance-illiterate viewer would enthusiastically agree.

Naharin is best known as the inventor of “Gaga,” a movement language that emphasizes seeing and imagining over performing. Put your arms in front of you, and slowly roll your shoulders, giving no thought to how it looks. Now let your head drop from your neck any which way you want. Try to connect to your inner animal. Now you’re on your way to understanding “Gaga.”

Ohad Naharin grew up on a kibbutz in Israel. Through home video footage, we see that he was a gifted dancer from the outset. “The idea of physical pleasure from »
