- Get ready for the return of the most popular video game hero... of the 1980s. Matt Hazard is staging his "comeback" against all his retro enemies in this hilarious parody of the last 25 years of video gaming!
- Matt Hazard is a video game hero, having debuted in 1983 as a side-scrolling shooter he was hired by a company called Marathon Games that brought him to 3D gaming where he accomplished greater success. Soon Hazard was granted creative control and his attempts to spin off his name into other genres failed, with a go-kart racer and kid-friendly, water gun themed shooter, Hazard fell from grace and public eye for years. Marathon Games was bought and renamed Marathon Megasoft, under the rule of CEO Wallace Wellsley III, Hazard is hired for a comeback game as a private detective and the starting level occurs at a Yakuza run steakhouse.
Hazard is to obtain a case of stolen money but when he arrives at the location a new character appears, Sting Sniperscope, an Arnold Schwarzenegger parody whom is to kill Hazard, Sting shoots but the game pauses, a female voice contacts Hazard, she refers to herself as "QA", Hazard's saves have been removed meaning he could die for good if killed and Sting is Hazard's intended replacement. Hazard punches Sting out and is teleported out of the game and taken to a place where he can discuss the situation with QA's digital avatar.
QA sends Hazard to the next level which is constantly changing to settings from Hazard's past games with all his old enemies attacking him, a result of a hacking assault from the real world, the CEO of Marathon, Wellesley has an intense hatred of Hazard due to the difficulty of his games and arranged his comeback to assassinate him, Wellsley's father is the owner of a chain of game stores and Hazard's contract states he cannot quit or be fired unless he is killed. Wellesley's assistant advises targeting Hazard's old friends from past games to lure Hazard out.
All of the company's hack attempts to slay Hazard come to nil, as he saves Bill the Wizard, an ally from a previous fantasy adventure and defeats Sting a second time. Wellesley cooks up a new plan involving a character named Dexter Dare, from Murder Force, a buddy cop game from Hazard's heyday. Hazard is spawned at Dare's mansion to warn him of Wellesly's intentions only for Dare to betray him, feeling resentment for being overshadowed in their team-up, Wellesley offered Dare his own game in exchange for Hazard's death. Dare flees and lets his killer robot girls dispose of Hazard, however, Hazard once again overcomes his attackers and pursues Dare into his garage, Hazard attacks Dare but then his robot guard malfunction and turn against him to which Hazard shoots them, saving Dare.
Hazard is sent to the start of the level for extraction only QA's signal is cut off, she returns only with a more sultry personality and Hazard is teleported to a liner where at the end two QA's appears leading to a typical "spot the impostor" moment, Hazard however knows which is the fake simply by their personality and detrimental actions.
Hazard is then taken to a warehouse where all the props for Marathon games are made most of which is taken to a docks where Hazard faces off against Sting for the third and final time, with Sting defeated a false ending appears, but then Hazard is transmitted to a simulation of the Marathon offices for a final gauntlet run against all enemies faced. Hazard however makes it to the top floor where Wellesley is preparing a defense and seemingly kills QA with a weapon of his own making. Hazard defeats Wellesley with a now face-turned Dare.
With Wellesley taken away in the real world Marathon is now under ownership of the real world QA, actually a man, Quentin A. Myers, lead programmer on some of Hazard's old games and stake holder in the company, he has creative control on Matt's games and wishes to make a proper comeback for the character.
A post-credits epilogue shows Wellesley working in his father's store and his anger at seeing Hazard's new game as the latest release.
