Brazilian Carlos Saldanha has become one of the most successful tellers of animated stories of all time, with credits including “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Rio” and “Rio 2,” while he co-directed “Ice Age” and “Robots.” He’s Blue Sky Animation Studio’s secret weapon, having unleashed a string of worldwide blockbusters that have grossed more than $3 billion.

Variety’s Creative Impact in Animation honoree’s got Oscar cred with a nom for 2003’s animated short “Gone Nutty,” and an exclusive deal at Fox, where his BottleCap Prods. calls home.

Growing up in Rio de Janeiro afforded Saldanha with a unique perspective of the world, and in particular, how it would come to shape his animation and filmmaking instincts and aesthetic. “I was always a film buff,” Saldanha recalls. “Movies were always very special to me, but I never knew how to accomplish my goals. »

Even Emma Watson and Tom Hanks May Not Be Enough to Make a Mark As April Ends

The last weekend of April, and the “slower” spring movie season is ending this weekend, leading directly into the start of the lucrative summer box office next week. As has been the case in past years, the last couple weekends in April see a couple movies hoping to bring in any amount of money before the first big summer blockbuster, and other movies that will steal away their theaters. Last weekend was pretty sad, but hopefully a few of this weekend’s movies will fare better.

The movie that stands the best chance at finding an audience this weekend is the tech industry thriller The Circle »

Film Review: ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’

14 April 2017 3:35 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The man behind the Guggenheim Museum’s solid-gold toilet, Maurizio Cattelan has been described as a prankster, a fraud, an imitator, an innovator, a genius, a xylophone, and “quite possibly the most infuriating smart-ass on the contemporary art scene.” Actually, I have no idea whether any of that previous sentence is true, but it sounds plausible, which is good enough for director Maura Axelrod. A hard-hitting news reporter who took a break from covering international danger zones (like Rio favelas and Afghan front lines) to make the softball art doc “Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back,” Axelrod plays along with her eccentric subject’s insouciant attitude vis à vis his own identity to mostly delightful effect.

Like so many recent films about contemporary artists, the movie functions more as publicity than portrait, reminding viewers within its first two minutes that Cattelan’s work sells at auction for $10 million — as if that »

First Trailers For Ferdinand Show A Lovable Bull With A Big Heart

30 March 2017 6:07 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Meet Ferdinand. He’s the most kind and gentle bull you’ll ever meet.

From the brilliant mind of Brazilian director Carlos Saldanha (Rio, Ice Age), Ferdinand is based off a lovable children’s book by Munro Leaf.

The film is about a bull, with a big heart, is mistaken for a ferocious dangerous beast. He is captured and taken away as he is very determined to return to his beloved family.

The all-star voice cast will include John Cena, Kate McKinnon, David Tennant, Gina Rodriguez, Bobby Cannavale and Anthony Anderson.

I’m looking forward to Ferdinand since it is based off a popular children’s story. Not to mention Saldanha has brilliantly led animation with Blue Sky Studios outside the well-known properties of Disney, Pixar or even Dreamworks. With Ice Age and Rio under his belt, this may launch a third successful animated property for this.

Ferdinand will be charging into theaters on Dec. »

Ferdinand tells the story of a giant bull with a big heart. Ferdinand, a little bull, prefers sitting quietly under a cork tree just smelling the flowers versus jumping around, snorting, and butting heads with other bulls. As Ferdinand grows big and strong, his temperament remains mellow, but one day five men come to choose the "biggest, fastest, roughest bull" for the bullfights in Madrid and Ferdinand is mistakenly chosen.
