The first season of “Chance,” Hulu’s finely crafted mystery-thriller starring Hugh Laurie, focused on one doctor’s quest to understand his own dangerous desires. He lived on the edge by studying not only his patients, but his own reactions to their plight.
Well, he’s reached a diagnosis. Eldon Chance’s (Laurie) hesitancy to dive headfirst into the dark, deep water of a criminal underworld, well, that’s gone. He’s jumping in with both feet, and he really likes getting wet.

Two new posters have arrived for The Dark Tower, and director Nikolaj Arcel has been speaking about that 95-minute runtime...
In an age of rather more lengthy cinematic blockbusters, some movie fans long for the days of the 90-minute-ish mainstream outings of the 80s and 90s, but when news arrived of The Dark Tower's established runtime - a crisp 95 minutes - there were some concerns about whether we were in for something less than we hoped for. Part of that is down to the film's rocky road to the big screen - reshoots were underway earlier in the year, and the studio also ended up pushing the release date back a fair way.

As I said I would a month ago, when it was announced that writer/director Thomas Ikimi had reunited with Idris Elba for a Fox hour-long drama series titled "The Crusaders," which the network has put into development, let's revisit the last time Elba and Ikimi worked together - the 2010 feature film titled "Legacy" which is currently available on various home video platforms; a film that I don't think many of you have seen, and that is rarely, if ever, discussed in conversations about Elba's past work and abilities as a actor. Elba stars as Black Ops soldier Malcolm Gray. Having barely survived a botched mission in Eastern Europe, he takes...

I raved about his feature film debut way back in 2010 - the psych thriller, "Legacy" which also starred Idris Elba by the way, as Black Ops soldier Malcolm Gray who, having barely survived a botched mission in Eastern Europe, takes sanctuary in a Brooklyn motel room, brooding on the guilty legacy of his past actions. Now Ikimi and Elba are teaming up again for a Fox hour-long drama series titled "The Crusaders," which the network has put into development. Following the traditional In Memoriam segment (which was accompanied by a sublime “Smile” cover from Sara Bareilles), Williams’ longtime friend and colleague Billy Crystal took the stage to eulogize the actor-comedian.
“He made us laugh. Hard. Every time you saw him,” Crystal remembered. “The brilliance was astounding, the relentless energy was kind of thrilling.”

While plot details for the upcoming Jurassic World are still being kept under wraps, we can speculate on a major story element just by the title, which suggests we'll be headed to an entire dinosaur-filled world this time around rather than a mere park.
What will that world look like? Well, we may have just been provided with our very first sneak peek!
A series of images posted over on the Jurassic Park Legacy forums appears to show a tour map of Jurassic World, and the user who posted the pictures claims that they are in fact the real deal.
As you'll see below, attractions on the Jurassic World premises include a golf course, petting zoo, underwater observatory, and even a feeding show and thrill rides, indicating that the theme park on display in the latest installment of the franchise will be a serious upgrade to the Jurassic Park we're used to.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

August isn’t fooling around with a ton of releases spanning both big budget and independent productions. I couldn’t even begin to talk about them all here—sorry Sparkle—but there sadly aren’t many designs worth mentioning anyway.
A lot of rehashed ideas litter the slate to accompany the sequel/reboot material they’re advertising and only an inspired viral campaign from the king of artistically minded posters saves us from mediocrity. Festival season better come soon or I won’t have enough worthy work to...

Janty Yates, costume designer for director Ridley Scott’s long-awaited sci-fi prequel Prometheus, is multi-award nominated and an Oscar winner for Gladiator (2000). She almost always collaborates with Scott (they have made seven pictures together and counting), but has an impressive catalogue of stand-alone work including Jude (1996), Plunkett & Macleane (1999) and Miami Vice (2006).
Clothes on Film caught up with Ms. Yates for an exclusive chat about the space suits and fatigues in Prometheus, which she describes as containing some of her proudest work since Gladiator. Spoiler Warning: We suggest only reading this after you have seen the film.
Clothes on Film, Chris: What was the costume brief for Prometheus?
Janty Yates: We wanted to go somewhere where it wasn’t traditional spacesuits. Sleek and slimline, to avoid the sort of ‘Michelin Man’ look of the Nasa suit.
CoF: So, to get away from any direct Alien references?

As expected, Tate Taylor's "The Help" won big at the 43rd Annual NAACP Image Awards. The film won Outstanding Picture of the Year with Viola Davis winning Outstanding Actress and Octavia Spencer taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress award. Taylor lost to "Jumping the Broom's" Salim Akil for Best Director because apparently, it's a better picture than "The Help!"

An Afro-Caribbean Heathcliff, a Caucasian anime hero and an all-black take on Tennessee Williams. How far can such 'race-bending, or 'race-lifting', go towards redrawing racial boundaries on film and stage?
Andrea Arnold's new version of Wuthering Heights has put the stray cat among the period-drama pigeons with its earthy realism and distinct lack of social niceties, but chances are, if you know anything about this movie, it is that it has got a black Heathcliff. "Black" meaning the role is played by two actors of Afro-Caribbean descent, Solomon Glave and James Howson.
This fact above all others as been widely reported in the press, perhaps with the expectation that the nation, like a 19th-century dame, would collectively primp its petticoats at the sight of "a coloured gentleman". Arnold's decision to augment Emily Brontë's text with lines such as, "He's not my brother, he's a nigger!" only exacerbates the racial provocation.

Please allow me to get on my soapbox again and preach to those of you not in the know about an amazing actor named Idris Elba whose been in the showbiz shadows for far too long. A few months back, I posted an article about Elba getting a well deserved lead role in the straight to DVD movie Legacy, which for a low budget action thriller was exceptional.

British actor Mem Ferda (Legacy) has provided some gory details on his upcoming film, The Devil's Double. To be released by Lionsgate in theatres July 27th, 2011, The Devil's Double is described both as biopic and as a gangland thriller, set in the harsh desert climes of Baghdad.
At recent showings, The Devil's Double has shocked audiences with a specific scene involving a brutal slaying, at a relaxing garden party. Ferda's character Kamel Hannah, a real life bodyguard of Saddam Hussein, upset Uday, Hussein's eldest son. And before you can shield your eyes, Hannah is disemboweled on the big screen, in graphic splashes of blood red.
Ferda says of the scene: "It was one of the most difficult scenes of my life...one minute I’m standing drunk on top of a table, laughing maniacally and spraying machine gun fire...the next moment my guts are spilled all over the place...

Director/writer: Thomas Ikimi.
Legacy or Legacy: Black Ops is a psychological thriller released in North America in theatres October 15th and on DVD December 28th, 2010. The film stars Idris Elba (28 Weeks Later), Julian Wadham (Outpost) and Mem Ferda (The Devil's Double), in director Thomas Ikimi's debut film. Legacy begins in the action thriller genre, but quickly switches to psychological thriller, as Malcolm Gray (Elba) cannot leave one special mission behind. The result is a slow burn, with some intriguing yet convoluted messages.
Gray is sent on an espionage mission to prevent a sarin gas attack on the eastcoast of the United States. He is caught tortured and returned home a former shell of himself. Here, the remainder of the film is shot within one dingy room, while Gray moans of operation "Dark Hammer." The cramped confines of the set are reduced due to a limited budget and the...

Codeblack Entertainment has acquired domestic distribution to romantic comedy Politics of Love (Love, Barack) and plans a July theatrical release.
We’ve covered the film on this site, so here’s a brief refresher…
Inspired by the real-life romances that blossomed during then Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, the movie takes place in the run-up to the 2008 election. Brian White plays a black volunteer coordinator working for the local John McCain office who strikes unexpected sparks with the devoted Indian Obama volunteer coordinator, played by Mallika Sherawat.
Ruby Dee and Loretta Devine co-star in this romantic comedy.
William Dear directed from a screenplay by Gary Goldstein.
I have no idea how CodeBlack plans to release the film; it’ll surely be a very limited release, if what they did with Thomas Ikimi’s Legacy which starred Idris Elba is anything to go by.
Below is a teaser trailer for...

31-year-old London-born filmmaker Thomas Ikimi has applied the Christopher Nolan school of filmmaking to his career so far.
Like Nolan’s debut, his first feature, Limbo, was a micro budget affair which cost $9000 and was produced mostly through using his student credit card. His follow-up, Legacy: Black Ops, which was released on DVD last week (you can read our review here), also shares a link to Memento via its similar delve into the mind of a troubled and psychologically-unbalanced protagonist (a striking central performance from The Wire’s Idris Elba).
Ikimi is of Nigerian descent and attended primary school in Nigeria and public school in England before gaining a literature and writing degree from Columbia University, New York. His next project (a sci-fi film) is currently in pre-production.
We caught up with him to chat about the making of ‘Black Ops’ and how he manages to get a one of...

I should have mentioned this earlier, but I’m only not becoming aware of it…
It was out on DVD in December… a film I’ve given lots of pixels to on this site – Thomas Ikimi’s Legacy, starring Idris Elba.
It’s also now available On Demand and via Netflix’s instant streaming option. So, you can watch it right now, if you have a Netflix account, and haven’t already. You’re just 2 or 3 clicks away 90 minutes with Malcolm Gray.
A quick recap… the psychological thriller, centers on Idris Elba as Black Ops soldier Malcolm Gray. Having barely survived a botched mission in Eastern Europe, he takes sanctuary in a New York motel room. Brooding on the guilty legacy of his past actions, he replays events in his mind as he focuses on the seemingly inexorable rise of his smooth-talking brother Darnell (Eamonn Walker), a ruthlessly ambitious, fear-mongering...

One of the UK’s biggest and brightest imports, Idris Elba, further establishes himself as a major transatlantic talent in this tale of an ex-soldier whose wartime demons begin to get the better of him.
The Wire star is Malcolm Gray, a member of an elite Black Ops unit whose team are overpowered and captured in a stylish pre-credit opening sequence. The rest of the action then takes place in a grubby Brooklyn hotel room where the now-freed Gray is holed up. Mentally and physically scarred from his time in captivity, he’s a changed man from his earlier incarnation as a gleefully aggressive soldier, and in an attempt to atone for past indiscretions, begins compiling evidence and recording video journals in which he places blame of his team’s double-cross on that of his ambitious, hard-line senator brother (Eamonn Walker).
As he begins to receive visitors from his past (including this brother’s wife,...

Takings for alien action flick won't dent its hefty budget, but they are enough to take it to the UK top spot ahead of Rango
The winner
For the second week in a row, a new release tops the chart with a gross that won't exactly have the multiplex chain HQs popping champagne corks. Sony's pricey Battle: Los Angeles debuted with a so-so £1.79m. A pretty underwhelming figure given that recent alien-invasion flick Skyline kicked off last November with £1.21m, despite having a no-name cast and a production budget a fraction of Battle: La's reported $100m. Furthermore, Cloverfield launched in 2008 with a much heftier £3.49m. Battle: La has also underperformed in the UK relative to its Us opening of $36m, a figure that indicates a UK number of about £3.6m – double the achieved result.
The flops
While the Farrelly brothers' Hall Pass debuted with an unremarkable £901,000, that number looks absolutely...

Espionage thriller Legacy: Black Ops is out on DVD and Blu-ray today following its release in cinemas last Friday.
Written and directed by London-born Thomas Ikimi, it centres on Black Ops agent Malcolm (Idris Elba) who returns home after a botched mission in Eastern Europe.
Pitched up in a Brooklyn motel room, he is torn between retribution and personal salvation, as he mentally unravels and starts putting together a plan for revenge on those he believes have betrayed his trust.
Starring alongside Elba (pictured above on left) is Mem Ferda (on right), who plays Andriy.
Ferda has previously been seen in TV shows such as The Bill, EastEnders, Heartbeat and Spooks and in films including Guy Ritchie's Revolver. At 6ft 2in with a brawler's physique he often ends up playing a villain.
Here, Mem Ferda tells us more about his part in the film and the other projects in which he is involved.

Legacy: Black Ops is an exercise in claustrophobic tension studying the effect of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on a soldier returning to civilisation after undergoing torture at the hands of the enemy. Norwegian Wood (15)
(Tran Anh Hung, 2010, Japan) Kenichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara, Tetsuji Tamayama, Kengo Kôra. 133 mins
Between its daunting cult status and its decidedly un-romcom themes, it's amazing Haruki Murakami's proto-emo Japanese teen tale ever got made. Coming of age here is a languid, melancholy journey across tragedy, mental illness, sexual frustration and other sorrows, but the tone is beautifully maintained, visually and aurally, and it captures something most youth movies never even attempt to find.
Fair Game (12A)
(Doug Liman, 2010, Us) Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Ty Burrell. 108 mins
What Hollywood liberal bias? This dramatisation of the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame over her husband's non-cooperation with Bush's Iraq plans dares to name names and point fingers. True-life political and personal tensions are brought back to the boil.
Battle: Los Angeles (12A)
(Jonathan Liebesman, 2011, Us) Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan. 116 mins
