'G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation' Trailer Not Too Bad

13 December 2011 6:58 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

"Yo Joe!"The general consensus of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is that it sucked big time and was a box-office failure.  A new director in Jon M. Chu (Step Up 3-D), a more formidable cast of Joes, The Rock and Bruce Willis, plus giving Channing Tatum fewer lines seems to have paid off for the G.I. Joe sequel Retaliation.  A script written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, Deadpool) also shows immediate potential for a better sequel ahead in the films first trailer. »

Where next for the X-Men franchise?

30 October 2011 8:39 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

With X-Men: First Class proving to be something of a success, what lies ahead for the X-Men movie franchise?

Earlier this year, X-Men: First Class (out now on DVD and Blu-ray) re-established Marvel’s mutant heroes as a franchise to be reckoned with, in the wake of the critical poundings heaped upon its previous entries, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. With its blend of period politics, character development and sci-fi allegory, it re-established X-Men as an action series with heavy philosophical heart – the thinking person’s blockbuster.

The film’s release on DVD this month brings the current chapter in the X-Men franchise to a close, and while nothing has been confirmed just yet, the next time we can expect to hear from the promotional machine will surely be when news of a new X-Men film finally leaks out. But success is fragile. Another bad film could »

Fox Sets Up Zombieland, Punisher TV Series

24 October 2011 10:09 AM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Fox is moving two concepts from movies to television.  The network is partnering with Sony Pictures Television to bring Zombieland to the small screen, in the form of a half-hour comedy, and working with Marvel on a cop procedural based on the comic book anti-hero The Punisher.

A “Zombieland” show once a week will likely be bittersweet news for fans of the 2009 genre-blender.  Because while the movie’s screenwriters, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, will write the potential TV series, THR reports it will replace any possible movie sequel.  The apocalyptic comedy started in 2005 as a spec television script, and Wernick and Reese haven’t given up on that original goal, despite a $75.6 million hit featuring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and a memorable cameo by Bill Murray.  (The cameo was originally written for Patrick Swayze.)

During the press rounds for the film, Wernick and Reese told MTV, “We »

Transformers 4 and 5 could film back to back, Micronauts movie picks up speed

19 October 2011 1:36 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

No Doubt spurred on by the $2.7billion earnings of the three Transformers movies - with almost half of that from the most recent robot adventure - toymakers Hasbro want to continue box office domination.

We previously revealed that another film was in the pipeline with Jason Statham tipped to be taking the lead.

Hasbro chief executive Brian Goldner has now given the first official word on the next film, stating that the company is in talks with Paramount, producer Steven Spielberg and director Michael Bay over Transformers 4.

Bay previously suggested he wouldn't helm the next instalment but is apparently still interested in directing, while star Shia Labeouf has said he doesn't want to return.

Variety reports that the plan is to make a fourth and fifth film together, thus saving money on special effects and actor negotiations and allowing more time for toy designs. It also mentioned that there is »

‘Zombieland’ Scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick Writing ‘Micronauts’ for J.J. Abrams

18 October 2011 4:24 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

If there’s any reason to be optimistic about G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, it would have to be the screenwriting credit attributed to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the duo behind the clever and entertaining Zombieland. (And, should this movie ever go into production, the same could be said about the X-Men spin-0ff, Deadpool.) This rule almost applies to yet another one of Paramount’s Hasbro-based movies, Micronauts, as Deadline reports that they’ve landed the writers gig on the “priority project.” I only say “almost” because this is being produced by J.J. Abrams — a man that, depending on who you ask, normally aligns himself with entertaining-yet-smart material.

Not knowing what Micronauts are, I did some digging (read: looked up Micronauts on Wikipedia) and discovered that they’re a Japanese toy line consisting of “action figures, vehicles, robots, play sets, and accessories.” The Japanese version, called Microman, even helped »

J.J. Abrams' "Micronauts" movie adds "Zombieland" writers

18 October 2011 12:53 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

J.J. Abrams' attempt at adapting a toy line for the big screen has finally found its writers. His interest in adapting Hasbro's action figures Micronauts into a feature film was first announced back in 2009, but now it seems like production is finally ready to head in front of the camera. Deadline has the news that "Zombieland" scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have been hired by Paramount and Abrams to pen the script's first draft.

Paramount only recently acquired the toy property from Hasbro, despite the fact Abrams has been sitting on it for two years. Wernick and Reese are no strangers to adapting toy franchises for the big screen. They also wrote the screenplay for "G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation," which is currently in production. The writing duo is also responsible for Fox's X-Men spin-off "Deadpool."

The Micronauts toy line was introduced to American audiences in 1976. Though the characters had imaginative names like Acroyear, »

Zombieland Sequel Heads to TV, Writers Take on Micronauts for J.J. Abrams

18 October 2011 10:34 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

If you're a fan of Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland, listen up! We've got a pair of Zombieland-related news stories for you this week, starting with an update on the sequel. As it turns out, Zombieland 2 probably not happening in the form you might expect. A couple of years ago, the original film opened to $24 million and Sony seemed pretty eager to get a sequel off the ground. A script was written but it has been slow to get a greenlight, partially due to scheduling complications (Emma Stone, in particular, is busy with The Amazing Spider-Man). Now word on the street is that Fox is teaming up with Sony to develop it for the small screen instead. Why would they suddenly want to bring Zombieland to television? Why, because of the success of AMC's The Walking Dead, of course! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Television is producing »

Micronauts Toys Become Next Transformers-Type Movie

18 October 2011 8:59 AM, PDT | kidspickflicks | See recent kidspickflicks news »

The next Hasbro toyline to be made into a movie is Micronauts, a toyline of "inner" space action figures from the 1970s, with Zombieland/Deadpool writing team Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick creating the screenplay for J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures. The toys, which are super lame by today's toy standards, do have a mythology : Marvel created a comic book series to accompany the toys in 1977.

The fact the toyline already has fully developed characters with a history will help combat the recent criticism that erupted after the Battleship trailer hit. The new thinking is that it's not that easy to create a credible movie from a toy or game that doesn't already have flushed-out events and adventures.

Hasbro has an 8-picture deal with Paramount Pictures. Hasbro has said it will not become a movie studio like Marvel.

Zombieland Writers Reese And Wernick Handling The Micronauts Movie

18 October 2011 5:40 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick launched their careers into the stratosphere in 2009 with Zombieland, the fresh, funny and most importantly original take on the zombie genre that was a surprise hit of that fall. But unlike that movie's director Ruben Fleischer, who went on to direct the peculiar comedy 30 Minutes or Less and now the flashy period film The Gangster Squad, Reese and Wernick have launched directly into super-lucrative careers as writers for. toys. Well, specifically movies featuring characters who will be toys, including the forthcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation and a take on the constantly gestating Deadpool movie based on the Marvel character. Now you can add a third set of toys to that list, and like the G.I. Joes, they're from the Hasbro family. Deadline reports that Reese and Wernick have been set to write a film based on the toy line Micronauts, for producer J. »

Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese Writing J.J. Abrams’ Micronauts

18 October 2011 5:19 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese just secured a deal to bring their 2009 comedy Zombieland to the small screen but they are in the news today for an even bigger project they are working on. Deadline reports that the duo have been set by Hasbro, Paramount and Bad Robot to write the Micronauts blockbuster movie that J.J. Abrams setup as producer two years ago, perhaps with the intention of directing.

Wernick & Reese have wrote the upcoming G.I. Joe sequel for the studio and their work has clearly impressed to get the gig on a movie Paramount & Hasbro hope can become a close cousin to the success of their Transformers series. And the similarities are clear – Micronauts are often seen as the Japanese version of Transformers as they were an interchangeable 3.75 inch-tall toy line created by Japanese toy company Takara in the 70s that directed influenced ‘the robots in disguise’.

Micronauts Script to be Penned by Zombieland Scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese

17 October 2011 5:48 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When one line of robot toys being turned into a massively successful movie franchise isn’t enough, it’s good to have a contingency plan.  Luckily for Hasbro, their Micronauts toy line will now undergo the film treatment through Paramount with J.J. Abrams producing.  Penning the script for this endeavor will be Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the team behind Zombieland. The project was listed as a priority during Hasbro’s third-quarter earnings conference, so it’s no surprise that the high-profile writing team of Wernick and Reese got the job.  Hit the jump for more on Micronauts. News of Wernick and Reese’s latest project comes by way of Deadline and is only the most recent in what’s been a busy year for the duo. They’ve recently handed in treatments for G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, currently under production with director John Chu and stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, »

Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick Writing 'Micronauts' Movie for Bad Robot

Another Hasbro toyline is getting a movie and it's not more Transformers thankfully. Deadline reports that Paramount recently made a deal with Hasbro to adapt the Micronauts toys into a feature film, and J.J. Abrams at Bad Robot is going to produce. Additionally, they've hired Zombieland writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, who have been moving up quickly in Hollywood with screenwriting work like Deadpool, Cowboy Ninja Viking and G.I. Joe 2, to pen the screenplay. We first heard about this in 2009, but this is the only update since. The people involved make this sound much too interesting to just shrug off, I'm curious. First released in Japan in 1974, the toys (under the original name Microman) were imported to the Us by Mego Corp. in 1976. The line consisted of 3.75-inch tall toys, featuring figures, vehicles, and robots, which used a universal, five millimeter inter-connective design. Mego canceled the »

Blu-ray Review: Green Lantern – Too Much Glitter, Not Enough Substance

17 October 2011 3:19 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

This year has belonged to the superhero. News has been focused heavily on the Spider-Man and Superman reboots, we had arguably one of the genre’s finest in the shape of X-Men: First Class, and one of the poorest in Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet. And not only that, Batman has also cast a long shadow over everything with the twin concerns of Arkham City and next year’s The Dark Knight Rises, drawing focus away from current releases thanks to a myriad collection of leaked images and rumours.

Because of that context, any brand new superhero franchise/property was going to have to work incredibly hard to make any kind of impact, and on the back of the reviews that Green Lantern picked up it doesn’t look like the gamble paid off.

The problem for DC was that Green Lantern isn’t the greatest comic book property. The »
