The Five-Year Engagement Flops?!

29 April 2012 10:10 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

On second thought, maybe it's a good thing The Avengers hasn't opened here yet. If it had, a batch of new movies, including Jason Segel and Emily Blunt's The Five-Year Engagement, would've been buried worse than they were at the box office.  The surprise romantic-comedy hit Think Like a Man was a surprise No. 1 for a second weekend. The Five-Year Engagement, pegged by some to rule the rankings, managed only a fifth-place debut. The Jason Statham action movie Safe and the costume-drama thriller The Raven fared even worse. The animated The Pirates! Band of Misfits bowed in second place, but really wasn't any bigger than those other films. For all its theaters, 3-D »

'Think Like a Man' Tops Quiet Weekend Box Office With $18M

29 April 2012 9:45 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Sony Screen Gems' "Think Like a Man" is the repeat box office champ. It was relatively quiet weekend, the last before next week's arrival of Disney and Marvel's "The Avengers," the first in what is expected to be a string of summer blockbusters. The African-American ensemble film, based on an advice book by comedian Steve Harvey, took in $18 million from 2,015 locations, lifting its overall gross to $60.8 million, according to Rentrak. Surprising in the No. 2 spot was Sony's animated family film "Pirates! Band of Misfits," propelled by a strong Saturday showing with a projected $11.5 million from 3,358 locations. It just beat out last week's No. 2 film "The Lucky One." The Warner Bros. movie, based on a Nicholas Sparks romance novel and starring Zac Efron, took in $11.3 million from 3,175 locations. That edged Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games," which took in $11.2 million at 3,572 locations. "The Five-Year Engagement," an R-rated comedy from Universal, was a disappointing fifth. Co-written by Jason Segel and Nick Stoller, it took in $11.1 million from 2,936 locations. The film, with a production budget of $30 million, received a B- Cinemascore from an audience that skewed female (64 percent to 36 percent male) and older (57 percent over 30 vs. 43 percent under). The weekend's two other new movies, "Safe" from Lionsgate and "The Raven" from Relativity, finished sixth and seventh, with $7.7 million and $7.2 million respectively. »
