Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour lock horns over SuBo or GaGa

16 December 2009 4:35 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Creative director for Vogue Grace Coddington and editor Anna Wintour have locked horns over the Hansel and Gretel segment of the Vogue December issue. Just like the movie, The September Issue, showed, the pair do not agree about the pages of the fashion bible but are reliant on one another like hand and glove. Coddington suggested Susan Boyle for the 'wicked witch' part in the Hansel and Gretel shoot, while Wintour wanted Lady Gaga. 'Annie Leibovitz wanted her [Subo] too, but I think Anna thought it was just all too British and not right,' Coddington said. But things worked out all right in the [Wintour] end. Coddington recalled: 'I have to say »

What to see: Lyn Gardner's theatre tips

Keira Knightley's West End debut tops a host of un-Christmassy openings, but time's running out for La Cage aux Folles

We're getting close to Christmas, but there are a remarkable number of unfestive openings this week. Blithe Spirit in Manchester should – of course – be a spirited production, directed by Sarah Frankcom who recently staged Simon Stephens's Punk Rock. In London, Patrick Hamilton's Rope is at the Almeida, the hugely starry Misanthrope with Keira Knightley and Damian Lewis is at the Comedy, Simon Callow is doing his Dickens turn in Dr Marigold and Mr Chips at Riverside Studios, and there's even an Agatha Christie thriller, A Daughter's Daughter, arriving opportunistically at Trafalgar Studios to fill in for a few weeks. Potted Potter, which is silly, hugely enjoyable fun, is in Studio 2. And even in Christmas week there are openings, with the RSC's Twelfth Night arriving at the Novello, »

Hollywood Will Lure You In With an Adaptation of The Piper

2 December 2009 10:20 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

One thing that I'm constantly shocked and astounded by are some of the morbid and morally questionable fairy tales, fables, nursery rhymes and legends that children hear at such a young age. Stories like Hansel and Gretel, Three Blind Mice or even the Dr. Seuss story of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins are surprisingly dark and grim. But now as an adult, I love when someone has the creativity to take these twisted stories and make them even more vicious. Such is the case with THR's report on an adaptation of the comic book The Piper, a twisted, contemporary take on the classic legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin. The comic centers on a bullied high school band student who unintentionally channels the spirit of the mysterious Pied Piper and triggers terrifying consequences of his actions beyond his control. Sounds like Carrie meets Bully, and I'm just fine with »

'Hansel and Gretel' to Get the Nazi Zombie Treatment

13 November 2009 4:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By: Alison Nastasi

Gotta love those dark Germanic fairy tales. They are ripe with strange folklore, the supernatural, and some of the most grotesque creatures ever imagined. These stories are intrinsically woven into the fabric of horror culture. You would think there would be more amazing fairy tale film adaptations, but only a few immediately come to mind: The Company of Wolves, Little Otik, Snow White and the Seven Dwarf and Labyrinth. Perhaps they hold more magic on paper, but it's inevitable that filmmakers will continue to turn to these tales for inspiration.

Earlier this year it was reported that Tommy Wirkola, the Norwegian director behind the Nazi-zombie flick Dead Snow will make his first U.S. feature with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The film is being produced by Gary Sanchez Productions--the Paramount company run by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Chris Henchy and Kevin Messick.

Producer Charles Roven Developing The Looking Glass Wars Movie

13 November 2009 8:43 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's always fun to take an established story and manipulate the so-called "happily ever after" ending. Steven Spielberg making Peter Pan grow up with Hook, or Hansel and Gretel becoming professional witch hunters are just a couple of fine examples. Now it looks like The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is set to play in the world of Wonderland as this morning on Good Morning America (via ComingSoon) author Frank Beddor announced that he has been working with Roven to adapt his series of novels collectively known as The Looking Glass Wars, which have a much different take on the classic Alice in Wonderland story. In this rather interesting take on that story, it claims that Leiws Caroll's two preceding books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) were nothing but lies and that this is the true story. Beddor's version features twists on the original story, such »

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Have a Writer to Guide Them

12 November 2009 12:24 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola is still on the warpath, working on his next film, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. As you might remember, Dead Snow is the Nazi zombies in the snow flick that first splashed down at Sundance this year and has been all over the festival circuit ever since. Wirkola has now brought a writer on to the project, which will be a Shaun of the Dead and The Brothers Grimm inspired take on the classic tale of two kids who narrowly escape being thrown into an oven. It is set in the aftermath of Hansel and Gretel's first encounter with the wicked witch of the woods -- in which they have returned to slay witches left and right. Writer Dante Harper, who has reportedly been working with David Fincher on the adaptation of the Charles Burns comic Black Hole (a project long thought to be dead at Paramount), has joined the team »

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Gets a New Writer

12 November 2009 9:18 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Writer / director Tommy Wirkola got on the map with Dead Snow, his zombie Nazi movie that hit a few festivals over the last year. Now he's looking to follow that up with a film that catches up with Hansel and Gretel fifteen years after a witch tried to turn them into dinner. We heard about this one, called Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, for the first time back in April. The project is still kicking, and it has a new writer, who hails from David Fincher's camp. Dante Harper worked with Fincher developing the Charles Burns comic Black Hole. (A project I would really love to see, but I thought was dead. Trade report implies that it remains alive, which thrills me.) Now he's working with Wirkola, who pitched and outlined Hansel and Gretel. Hopefully he can push the story to be a bit more effective beyond the basic »

Writers join Fright Night remake, Dead Snow director’s Hansel And Gretel

12 November 2009 7:41 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marti Noxon will script the remake of the 1985 vampire fave Fright Night for DreamWorks and producers Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig. She’s an appropriate choice, given her experience writing and producing for TV’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

The new film will maintain the mix of chills and humor from writer/director Tom Holland’s original, which stars Chris Sarandon as a suave but deadly bloodsucker who moves next door to a horror-loving teenager (William Ragsdale), who turns to a washed-up TV creature-feature host (Roddy McDowall) for help. The FX will be “modernized” (read: lots of CGI); a director and cast have yet to be signed. Noxon’s many other TV credits include Grey’S Anatomy, its spinoff Private Practice, Prison Break and, currently, the hit series Mad Men.

Dante Harper to Polish Script for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

11 November 2009 9:55 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It's been about six months since we first heard about Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, the brainchild of Dead Snow co-writer/director Tommy Wirkola under the auspices of Gary Sanchez Productions and Paramount. Now finally the project has a writer to take Wirkola's idea and smooth it out a bit: Dante Harper.

Harper's last genre film was Black Hole, which David Fincher has been developing (also at Paramount). But as for H&G: Witch Hunters, "[Wirkola] pitched and plotted out the story line, which picks up the fairy-tale siblings 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread house incident, which provoked them to become witch bounty hunters.

Sanchez execs Kevin Messick, Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Chris Henchy are producing the horror-action comedy, which is pitched as having a gory-but-funny 'Shaun of the Dead' vibe."
