Jared Leto Will Star in Brett Ratner's Hugh Hefner Movie

3 October 2017 8:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Hugh Hefner, who passed away last week, had a huge influence on movies. There's the work he did in film preservation, helping to restore prints of The Big Sleep and Pandora's Box. There's the pop cultural presence his publication had in such movies as Apocalypse Now and of course The House Bunny. And he's been a figure worth portraying on screen, from James Franco's brief role in Lovelace to Cliff Roberton's performance in Star 80 and even Stan Lee's cameo in Iron Man.  Now Hefner is going to finally get a proper biopic of his own. Brett Ratner, who has been trying to get the project made for at least a decade, has announced Jared Leto will star as the iconic Playboy mogul. Quoted by...

Exclusive: From 'Undressed' to 'StartUp,' a Career Retrospective With Adam Brody

28 September 2017 8:03 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

For better or worse, Adam Brody will always be remembered as Seth Cohen from The O.C. The affable and awkward teen is easy to find inside the weathered and wiser 37-year-old Brody, but the San Diego native might never be able to shake his early-aughts pop culture iconography. Despite that infamous role, Brody has had a pretty consistent career over the last two decades, playing opposite Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, being directed by famed playwright Neil Labute and making guest appearances on beloved TV shows like House of Lies and The League. This month, he’s in the buddy comedy Big Bear, where he gets to sport a pretty mean mustache, and returns with the second season of StartUp on Crackle.

With two such diverse roles coming out in the same month and nostalgia for shows like Gilmore Girls and The O.C. at an all-time high, Brody sits down »

Maggie Betts to Co-Write and Direct Political Drama for Focus Features

29 June 2017 9:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Maggie Betts: Variety/YouTube

Novitiate” writer-director Maggie Betts has booked her follow-up to the coming-of-age nun drama. Deadline reports that she’s sold an untitled original pitch to Focus Features. Little is known about the project except that it’s a contemporary political drama and Betts will direct. She’ll also pen the script along with Andy Bellin (“Lovelace”).

Maven PicturesCeline Rattray and Trudie Styler are set to produce, while Josh McLaughlin will oversee the movie for Focus.

Novitiate,” Betts’ first narrative feature, premiered at Sundance back in January. She won the Breakthrough Director award at the fest. Sony Pictures Classics snagged the rights to the film and is planning a release this fall. The 1960s-set drama follows Cathleen (Margaret Qualley, “The Leftovers”), a young woman who is raised by a non-religious single mother in rural Tennessee. A scholarship to a Catholic School leads Cathleen down a religious path where she pursues a life devoted to God, but on her journey to becoming a nun, she begins to question her faith. The nearly-all-female cast includes Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”), Dianna Agron (“Glee”), Julianne Nicholson (“Masters of Sex”), and Morgan Saylor (“White Girl,” “Homeland”).

“Focus has made a concerted effort to bolster its roster of female directors,” Deadline observes. “Counting the new deal with Betts, it has put six such films in the mix: the Niki Caro-directed ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife,’ the Julia Decournau-directed ‘Raw,’ the Sofia Coppola-directed ‘The Beguiled,’ the Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre-directed ‘Mustang’ and most recently the Massy Tadjedin-directed ‘Circle Of Treason.’” In 2016 Focus released women-directed titles such as Lorene Scafaria’s “The Meddler,” Rebecca Miller’s “Maggie’s Plan,” Meera Menon’s “Equity,” and Maren Ade’s “Toni Erdmann.”

Betts previously helmed the documentary “The Carrier,” a portrait of an HIV-positive and pregnant mother, and “Engram,” a short about an elderly man and woman who reconnect after many years.

Check out a video of Betts and the stars of “Novitiate” discussing what drew them to the project. They explain how rare — and appealing — it was to work on a female-led story.

Michael Bay’s ‘Drone Warrior’ Biopic Finds Writer in Andy Bellin

24 May 2017 4:54 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Screenwriter Andy Bellin will adapt the military action movie “Drone Warrior” for Michael Bay and Paramount.

Variety first reported last year that production company Bay Films was developing a biopic of former U.S. Army intelligence analyst and drone warfare expert Brett Velicovich for Paramount Pictures, in a story of how the Iraq War vet and one-time U.S. intelligence specialist used his drone skills to fight terrorists. Paramount optioned Velicovich’s life rights and upcoming memoir, co-written with Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal reporter Christopher S. Stewart, for Bay Films to develop.

The book — titled “Drone Warrior: An Elite Soldier’s Inside Account of the Hunt for America’s Most Dangerous Enemies” — will be published by Dey Street Books on June 27. Velicovich spent nearly a decade as a member of Delta Force, the U.S. Army’s most elite unit.

Chicago – The photograph of the 2016 movie year is undoubtedbly the iconic shot of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, caught in mid dance, in the musical “La La Land.” The film received 14 nominations for this Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony (Feb. 26th), and the “Unit Still Photographer” who got the shot was Dale Robinette.

“Uncle Dale” Robinette first contacted me via email in 2013, to give information about some photos he took on the film “Lovelace.” Ever since then he has been a reliable email pal, sending me image after image from the movie sets that he is “blessed” (his word) to work on. He has plied his skills in Hollywood as a Unit Still Photographer since 1988, after a career as a stage and television actor in New York and Los Angeles. Starting with a TV short called “The Big Five” (1988), he has worked his way up the ladder, and has built »
