Robin Williams: A Man of a Million Voices

13 August 2014 7:19 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Yesterday we ran a story on some of Robin Williams’ most under appreciated performances. But as the remembrances keep rolling in and as new, gruesome details about his suicide become apparent, it became clear that Williams didn’t just have depth in his filmography; he was an actor and performer who displayed worlds of expression and moved so many in remarkable and distinct ways.

Rather than ask our staff to rattle off more of their favorites, we asked them to recall Williams’ personality and the legacy his work left on their lives. We’re looking at each side of his many faces as a comedian, a movie star, a voice actor and a true character, offering our final goodbye to a man who gave us so much.

Zany, Charismatic Exuberance

Say what you will about Robin Williams’ quiet, dramatic abilities or his subtle grace notes of acting, but Williams at »

Will Ferrell Circling Lead Role In Russ Meyer / Roger Ebert Pic Russ & Roger Go Beyond

4 August 2014 6:45 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Earlier this year, Roger Ebert’s fascinating life was brought to the big screen in the incredible Life Itself, but Hollywood doesn’t appear to be done with the legendary film critic just yet. Russ & Roger Go Beyond, a project centering on Ebert’s collaboration with eccentric filmmaker Russ Meyer on the ill-fated satire Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, has popped up and is gaining some traction. According to Deadline, Will Ferrell is eyeing the part of Meyer in the pic, which will explore the comedic and unnatural partnership that the two men struck up.

This isn’t the first time that Meyer’s story has been tackled by filmmakers. David O. Russell was planning a biopic at some point, with a script written by Merritt Johnson (Lovelace), though the director’s other projects appear to have sidelined it permanently. This one doesn’t have a director yet (Edgar Wright reportedly has interest, »

Will Ferrell Eyes Role Of Russ Meyer In 'Russ & Roger Go Beyond'

1 August 2014 11:56 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Hollywood has been trying to bring the saga of Russ Meyer on the big screen, and why not? The filmmaker had an outsized life, and loved uh, outsized women, and put his own, weird mark on cinematic history. Way back in 2011, David O. Russell was planning a Russ Meyer biopic, written by “Lovelace” screenwriter Merritt Johnson, but that seems to have disappeared. However, last fall a new project popped up titled, "Russ & Roger Go Beyond," and it will detail one of most curious chapters in the lives of both Russ Meyer and legendary film critic Roger Ebert, with a big star eyeballing one of the lead roles. Deadline reports that Will Ferrell is circling the part of Russ Meyer in the Christopher Cluess (“The Simpsons,” “SNL”)-penned movie that will tell the tale of Ebert and Meyer, who traveled to Hollywood and the 20th Century Fox lot to write “Beyond Valley of the Dolls. »

The Academy Invites 271 New Members for 2014

26 June 2014 12:44 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o among 271 Academy invitees

26 June 2014 12:04 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent - Inside Movies news »

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years. »

Josh Hutcherson, Lupita Nyong'o, Pharrell and 268 others invited to join the Academy

26 June 2014 11:50 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn. »

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs told Variety Thursday, “This is a continuation of an initiative to bring in new voices. Filmmaking has gotten more diverse, and audiences have been responding. You can't sit with us! Mean Girls turns 10 - 22 most fetch moments

Amanda Seyfried has played iconic roles in her career, from Cosette in Les Misérables to Linda Lovelace in Lovelace, but to a generation she will always be known as Karen Smith.

Alongside fellow Plastics Regina George (Rachel McAdams) and Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), Seyfried nabbed most of the best lines in the movie - but which is her favourite?

When we were sitting down with Seyfried to talk about her latest movie A Million Ways to Die in the West, we just had to ask, and while we were chatting we also quizzed her on the possibility of a Mean Girls sequel.

"God she's so dumb," Seyfried told us of Karen. "So blissfully ignorant. It's so fun to play that."
