When a sitcom starts to repeat storylines, or do alternate versions of them you get the sense that it is running out of steam.
'My Family' ventures into this territory here through the idea of the Harpers getting a dog, which had previously been covered in S6's 'And Other Animals'.
Thankfully the Armogdia's script doesn't dwell too much on the idea from that episode (Ben not liking dogs), in fact he seems quite open to it here, and as long as you can get over the repetition, there's lots to enjoy here.
We even get a fairly amusing subplot involving Michael/Janey/Alfie/Roger, in another good episode from the 9th series overall.
