True Legend tells the story of Su Can (Vincent Zhao), who turns down a position to become governor after rescuing his lord. Instead, he decides to pursue enlightenment through martial arts, leaving the opportunity to his brother in-law, Yuan (Andy Oh). After assuming the role of governor, Yuan returns home, seeking revenge on Su Can's father.
Woo-ping Yuen returns to the role of director in this meandering movie. True Legend neither has a sensible storyline, nor particularly stunning action scenes. Furthermore, the combination of martial arts with a CGI backdrop creates a dissonant mess, obscuring the true performance skills of Vincent Zhao that was evident in Once Upon a Time in China. True Legend pales in comparison to memorable fighting scenes and seamless storyline of movies like Ip Man. Finally, with such a caricature enemy as Yuan, who has sewn armor to his skin and unleashes venom for his ultimate attack movie, True Legend does not do justice to the martial arts film genre.
