Austria’s Red Bull Media House will unspool McConkey at Cannes, a portrait of U.S. extreme skiing and Base-jumping icon Shane McConkey, who died in an accident in 2009.
Pic is Rbmh’s move away from straight-to-vid or VOD films aimed at core sports communities into features targeting more mainstream audiences.
To that end, Red Bull’s sports movies are becoming more sophisticated, according to Sophokles Tasioulis, Rbmh head of cinema and international theatrical sales.
“Rather like Asif Kapadia’s Senna, this is not one action scene after another, it’s character-driven, the portrait of a unique, very passionate person,” Tasioulis said.
Rbmh will also screen Cerro Torre at a buyer-invitation only event. Pic follows Austrian David Lama’s first free ascent of Cerro Torre, Patagonia’s needle mountain.
Both pics form part of Rbmh’s three-pronged production strategy, Tasioulis said.
This sees Rbmh making features with global theatrical release »

★★★★☆ A wildly entertaining and well-drawn portrait of one of music's most tempestuous figures, first-time director Jay Bulger's vivid rockumentary Beware of Mr. Baker (2012) drops off the festival circuit and into UK cinemas this week thanks to Curzon Film World. Whilst it may struggle to appeal to the same crossover audiences that fell for Malik Bendjelloul's Oscar-winning Searching for Sugarman last year, for anyone even remotely interested in the enigmatic man, his various short-lived musical collaborations or the British jazz-rock scene of the 1950s-70s, Bulger.'s even-handed exposé floats like a butterfly and stings like a Baker.
Best-known to most as the show-stopping drummer behind such legendary outfits as Cream and Blind Faith, Ginger Baker's life story is one of towering highs and crashing lows. Influenced heavily by Afrobeat and experimental jazz, Baker eventually found himself playing with one of the first true stadium rock bands, Cream, »

Film is set to look into the late singer's troubled life, her relationships and the media attention she attracted
The life and times of the singer Amy Winehouse is to form the subject of a new documentary by Asif Kapadia. The British film-maker won the Bafta documentary award for his previous picture, Senna, a portrait of the Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna, who was killed at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. His Winehouse film looks set to provide another tale of surging triumph curtailed by tragedy.
Singer-songwriter Winehouse won five Grammy awards for her breakthrough 2006 album Back to Black. But her career was dogged by reports of substance abuse and mental health issues. She died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.
The as-yet-untitled documentary will be produced by James Gay-Rees, Kapadia's partner at the Playmaker Films production company, with a co-production credit for Universal Music. "Amy »

The yet-untitled documentary film will also feature never-before-seen footage of the tragic musician, who died at her Camden home from alcohol poisoning. »

Amy Winehouse's family has finally given up the rights to a documentary about the late singer's life. Focus Features International received a greenlight on the project, which will be directed by "Senna's" Asif Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees.
"This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can," Kapadia and Gay-Rees say in a statement.
The Winehouse family says it's been approached many times by people asking to make a documentary about Amy's life. What made this take on the 27-year-old singer's life and death different was the way it promised to "look at Amy's story sensitively, honestly and without sensationalizing her."
After a successful music career and many publicized troubles with substance abuse, Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. Her second album, »

Ever since her sad, but sadly predictable, death in 2011, the notion of an Amy Winehouse biopic was all but certain and now official word has dropped that Senna director Asif Kapadia has been selected to helm a doc about the life of the late big-voice soul singer who died at 27.
Kapadia, along with producer James Gay-Rees, also have the added bonus of getting the blessing of the Winehouse clan, who said in a statement that though they'd been approached by a slew of filmmakers about taking on the project, they settled on the duo because they promised to "look at Amy's story sensitively, honestly and without sensationalizing her."
And since the movie will be documentary, which will include unseen archival footage according to Focus Features International, the tendency to go melodramatic will at least be curbed by not having an actress portray the main subject a la Liz & Dick debacle. »

The controversial life story of Amy Winehouse is to be told in a new documentary film headed by Senna director Asif Kapadia. Focus Features International will be selling the worldwide rights to the doc at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention,” Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees said in a statement. “She wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle.”
This should be an interesting project and one that is in the safe hands of the BAFTA-winning Kapadia. Amy Winehouse was arguably the most important British singer-songwriter of the early 21st century, whose soulful one of a kind voice and incredible eye for scathing lyrics made her a global Superstar. She paved the way for the likes of Adele, »

It’s still sad to remember that the strikingly talented Amy Winehouse died at 27, and we’d only seen a flicker of her musical achievements with surely so many more to come. I recollect picking up her debut ‘Frank’ way before the media got a hold of her life, and although she wasn’t exactly shy of taking on the role of an icon, in retrospect it felt like the pressures of being such a high profile star had a part to play in her demise.
However, there’s still more to see and hear as this year will see the release of the documentary that documents her life with never-seen-before footage and surely personal accounts from friends and family. It’s due to screen at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May and bringing the tragic real-life story to the screen is Asif Kapadia, most famous for his unforgettable Senna documentary. »
