Trivia

Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning spent a lot of time together prior to the shoot in order to build the father-daughter relationship their characters have. For example, Dorff sometimes picked Fanning up after school.
A number of the dialogs were improvised by the actors, notably the things said by Sammy (Chris Pontius) to Cleo (Elle Fanning). This was done in order to provoke genuine surprise from Fanning. Pontius, in fact, was specifically chosen for his improvisation skills, as well as his good rapport with children.
The set of lenses Sofia Coppola used for this film were the actual ones her father Francis Ford Coppola used for Rumble Fish (1983).
There is no dialogue until 15:02 into the film.
Stephen Dorff chose to live at the Chateau Marmont during filming in order to get fully into his character.
Sofia Coppola had to appear in The Girls Next Door: Uncover Girls (2009) in order to gain access to the Playboy Mansion and meet Kristina Shannon and Karissa Shannon, who play the stripper twins that Johnny enjoys.
The casting of Elle Fanning was suggested by executive producer Fred Roos, who'd been impressed by her performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). Sofia Coppola was initially reluctant however, believing Fanning to be a typical, professional "Hollywood child actress", but agreed to meet her, and was won over.
Sofia Coppola wrote the role of Johnny Marco with Stephen Dorff in mind.
The film's "Golden Lion" win at the Venice Film Festival was highly controversial, with some people questioning President of the Jury Quentin Tarantino's objectivity due to Sofia Coppola being a former girlfriend of his.
"Somewhere" was at first only meant to be a working title.

Cleo is talking to Johnny about a vampire book she is reading which sounds a lot like "Twilight". Cleo is played by Elle Fanning whose sister, Dakota Fanning plays Jane in three of the Twilight Saga films.

In the hotel party scene, after Johnny drops off his daughter, a woman can clearly be seen drinking "Sofia" - a sparkling wine in a pink can (with a straw), made by Francis Ford Coppola Winery.
