Do you know "Raul"? I don't and I never cease to be fascinated by this bizzarre Cannes Festival tradition. Sometimes, just before a press screening, someone screams "Raouuul!". No one seems to know why or when this phenomenon started, but the most seasoned journalists I know told me that the Raoul tradition started many, many years ago. Maybe I can just google it and find an answer but every person I ask about it has a different theory, so I'm enjoying the mystery. Anyway, on to today's three films...

The cast of Good Christian Belles
(All photos courtesy ABC)
A recently divorced mother of two moves back to the affluent Dallas suburb where she grew up. There she must do social battle with her former high school social circle - a klatch of southern belle mean girls. The story comes from a novel called Good Christian Bitches and the pilot (from Sex and the City producer Darren Starr) shared the same trenchant title until Christian and feminist groups took issue with the whole "Bitches" thing. Too bad, because the replacement settled on, Good Christian Belles, sounds a little bland. Why not Adequate Agnostic Junior Leaguers?
In any event, ABC has picked up the series, but as a 2011-2012 mid-season replacement, so you might not get to see it until next February. Too bad, because it does look entertaining and has a phenomenal cast including Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth and...

You know Seth MacFarlane. He has created and provided the voices for characters in his animated comedies, like Family Guy, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show.
You also know Laura Vandervoort, Smallville‘s Supergirl and mainstay in the V reboot.
What do you get when you put the two together? You get Ted!
Deadline.com made the announcement that the film called Ted, which will come to us from the mind of MacFarlane, has just won Vandervoort as a cast member. She’ll play a “gorgeous salesgirl” working at a rental car service. She’s absolutely “clueless” regarding “the gaggle of men who drool over her all day.” Her character’s name is Tanya.
With her in the film are stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Giovanni Ribisi and Patrick Warburton. On 30 April MacFarlane shared this via Twitter:
Filming on “Ted” has begun at last– best cast and crew a guy could ask for.

Last month, we reported that the new film version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest was available for pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray. Today, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment confirmed that the movie will be released on Sept. 13, as well as other details.
The Tempest, which was nominated for an Oscar for costume design, features a great cast, including Helen Mirren (Red), Alfred Molina (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), Chris Cooper (The Company Men), Alan Cumming (Riverworld), Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator), Tom Conti (TV’s Four Seasons), David Strathairn (Howl), Felicity Jones (Cemetery Junction) and comedian Russell Brand (Get Him to the Greek).
Directed and adapted for the screen by Julie Taymor (Across the Universe), the movie changes the main character of Prospero to a woman, Prospera (Mirren), in the 16th or 17th century, when women practicing the magical arts of alchemy were often convicted of witchcraft. Prospera is sent off on a...

The lastest casting news for the tenth and final season of the CW’s “Smallville” is the return of Laura Vandervoort (“V”, “Riverworld”) to the cast. Vandervoort will reprise her role as the Kryptonian, Kara Zor-El, Clark’s cousin, aka Supergirl.
Supergirl will be back for one episode that is expected to air in October. Vandervoort played Supergirl in the seventh season of “Smallville” and briefly again in the front of season eight to conclude the Supergirl storyline. How will her return impact Clark’s journey to becoming Superman? We will have to wait and see.

Earlier this month, the CW Network stated that several former cast members of "Smallville" will come back to the series during its tenth and final season. Towards that end, another returning actress has been revealed.
Laura Vandervoort has agreed to reprise her role as Clark Kent's cousin Kara, according to Entertainment Weekly. Kara — who in the comics is better known as Supergirl — will be back for a single episode that will wrap up her storyline. When last seen during the eighth season of "Smallville," Kara left Earth to find the lost Kryptonian city of Kandor, which could be addressed during her return.
Since leaving "Smallville," Vandervoort has starred in the miniseries "Riverworld" and the revival of the sci-fi series "V" on ABC, in which she plays one of the alien visitors.

This past weekend SyFy presented the four-hour mini-series (and possible pilot) Riverworld, and while the reviews have not been kind, the network deserves credit for being gay inclusive ... when they didn't have to be.
Antonio and Hal ... Before.
Riverworld is about ...well ... it's complicated. But basically it involves ... okay, honestly, I'm not entirely sure what it was about. People die, and then they end up on an alien slab, dripping wet and naked (with just a flimsy piece of cloth covering their naughty bits), and then they're transported to "Riverworld," fully clothed, but as young, hot versions of themselves.
Antonio and Hal ... After.
Two of the main characters are a gay couple, Hal (Matthew MacCaull) and Antonio (Matty Finochio), who struggle to endure the violent purgatory their mysteriously find themselves in and ... almost survive.

SyFy, or SyMeh as I've taken to referring to it (thanks Sam), is rebooting their own Riverworld this weekend, and it actually looks like something worth tuning in for. Sure, Megapiranha is completely dumb fun, but in the end it's the dumb part we need less of and the fun part everyone wants SyFy to increase. Will this Sunday's Riverworld series be that vehicle?
SyFy tried to get Riverworld going as a show a few years back. The popular novel series, about what happens when every human in history wakes up on an alien world engineered to be one, giant river, was adapted in 2003 for a possible series. The series never came together, apparently budget and production issues were never completely ironed out, so only a middlin' pilot episode was made.

Mark takes a look at some of the more specific examples of typecasting happening in the world of TV and film today...
We all know of actors who are typecast, stuck replaying what is essentially the same role over and over. The set and plot may change, but the shtick remains the same. Jason Statham is a gruff tough guy without a sense of humour. Jim Carrey is an unhinged wacky person with a penchant for pulling funny faces. Michael Cera is an awkward teenager and Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise.
But some actors have refined the art of typecasting to the point where the characteristics on display are incredibly specific. It's quite the niche they've dug out for themselves. First up on the list we have...

I originally tried to write a traditional review for this new incarnation of “Riverworld”, but found it too difficult. The review just never came together, which happens when I find myself writing about a movie that I neither loved nor hated. “Riverworld” falls somewhere in there. As a result, I’ve written this non-traditional review. Please to enjoy. What Is It: “Riverworld” is the second attempt by the SyFy Channel to create a TV series around the fantasy/science fiction novels by author Philip Jose Farmer, with the first one being 2003’s “Riverworld” (back when the channel was still the Sci Fi Channel). The 2010 version stars Tahmoh Penikett (of “Battlestar Galactica” and “Dollhouse” fame) and Laura Vandervoort (of “Smallville” fame). Penikett is Matt, a war journalist who is finally ready to settle down and Vandervoort is Jessie, a blonde, gorgeous tour guide. As Matt is popping the question to Jessie,...

Syfy announced its slate of original movies for the 2010-2011 season, including the promised "Sharktopus."
"Riverworld," based on the classic sci fi novels by Philip Jose Farmer, is a four-hour movie event that stars "Battlestar Galactica's" Tahmoh Penikett and "Smallville's" Laura Vandervoort.
The story centers on the greater part of humanity that lived on Earth suddenly finding themselves resurrected on a terraformed planet known as Riverworld. Among these people are war correspondent Matt Ellman (Penikett) and his fiancee (Vandervoort), both of whom had been killed and now find themselves alive and kicking, although separated. Matt enlists the help of Mark Twain (Mark Deklin) and a 13th-century female samurai warrior Tomoe (Jeananne Goossen).
Another four-hour movie event, "The Phantom," premieres in June and reimagines the classic comic strip. Ryan Carnes stars as Chris Walker/The Phantom, along with the legendary Isabella Rossellini as the villainous Lithia.

Well ABC seemed to be out in the lead for having the most shows we were thankful for in 2009 with 4 of their new shows making our list. In second place was the USA channel with 2, while Syfy, Fox, HBO and NBC all had 1 on the list as well. I was surprised that CBS didn’t make our list but with so many already good shows previous to 2009 they didn’t have to add a lot to their programming schedule. Glee got our top spot while Flashforward barely made the list.

Couldn’t think of any other show to go here than this one. A complete surprise this musical dramedy series from of all people, Ryan Murphy, the guy who brought us Nip/Tuck. This series is a massive 180 from his repetoire but thats okay because we love it. Everything from the weekly musical selections, to the talented group of...

Earlier this week, Rhi Entertainment release a trailer for their new SyFy channel miniseries, Riverworld, staring Tahmoh Penikett (Dollhouse), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Mark Deklin (Life on Mars), Peter Wingfield (Highlander) and Alan Cumming (X-Men 2).
Riverworld focuses on a journalist named Matt (Penikett) and his fiancée Jessie (Vandervoort), who were both killed in an explosion, but soon awake to find themselves on some strange planet covered with rivers. The planet is populated by everyone from earth who has died. They soon team up with Mark Twain and other resurrected souls to travel upstream in an attempt to find what who or what is behind this.
This will mark the second time SyFy has attempted to develop a project based on the Riverworld books by Philip José Farmer. In 2003 SyFy (then Sci-Fi) aired a feature-length backdoor series pilot for Riverworld. The airing didn’t garner a large enough audience to continue production on a the series.

Rhi Entertainment recently put a full trailer for their “Riverworld” mini-series that is set to be released as a backdoor pilot on the SyFy Channel sometime in 2010 on YouTube. Embarking upriver, their adventure begins, all the while tracked by the watchful eye of a mysterious alien force. The mini-series stars Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Mark Deklin (Life on Mars), Peter Wingfield...

Rhi Entertainment have released the first trailer for SyFy's upcoming Riverworld miniseries, based on the classic books by Philip José Farmer. Being a big fan of the book I was really hoping this production would do the book justice and offer something we visually haven't seen on TV before, but it doesn't really look that much better than the miniseries that came out about four years back. It's fun to see BSG alumni Tahmoh Penikett and Alessandro Juliani together again, but other than that I'm still on the fence.

Here’s your first look at Tahmoh Penikett in the new SyFy channel’s relaunching of Philip José Farmer’s Riverworld. The new TV series will star Pinikett (of Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse) as war journalist Matt Ellman, who dies while on his honeymoon with his wife Jessie (Smallville and the new V’s Laura Vandervoort) and wakes up in the titular Riverworld, a mysterious planet where every person who has ever lived on Earth is brought after their death. The premise of the show will have Matt trying to find Jessie, while at the same time uncovering the truth behind Riverworld. Check out the first promo images from the show below, plus a behind-the-scenes video with co-star Alan Cumming as he transforms into one of the blue-skinned guardians that watches over Riverworld. When American war zone journalist Matt Ellman (Tahmoh Penikett, Battlestar Galactica) and his fiancée, Jessie Machalan (Laura Vandervoort,...
