Pesci and Pacino Up For The Irishman?

14 September 2010 12:57 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Exciting – if still rumour-y – news coming out of Deadline today: one of Martin Scorsese’s possible future projects, hit man tale The Irishman, which already features Robert De Niro aiming to star, has now attracted the attention of Joe Pesci and Al Pacino.Adapted from Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses, the film will follow the life of mob hit man Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, with De Niro playing the conflicted Sheeran. It’s been slowly developing at Paramount, with Scorsese pondering whether to make it as his next movie after Hugo Cabret. Since he hasn’t yet committed yet, we’re considering Pacino and Pesci in the “likely” file rather than attached, but who doesn’t want to see De Niro and Pacino in particular together again, if only to wash the mess that was Righteous Kill from our collective cinematic experience? This Irishman might be »

Mickey Rourke and his BAFTA awardDeadline reports Mickey Rourke will star in an adaptation of Philip Carlo's book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, which tells the true story of Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski who for over 40 years led a double life as a notorious professional assassin and a loving husband and father in suburban New Jersey. David McKenna (American History X, Blow) is writing the screenplay.

This certainly sounds like the type of story that is perfect for Rourke's signature blend of sensitivity and toughness, and producer Matty Beckerman calls it "a role Mickey Rourke was born to play."

The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch have signed on to star in the black comedy Killer Joe for director William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection). The script, by Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning writer Tracy Letts, centers on »

Cannes -- Christopher Walken is negotiating to join the action-comedy "Wild Oats," from writer Claudia Myers and director Scott Marshall.

Shirley MacLaine, Maria Bello, Christina Ricci, John Corbett and Bill Pullman already are aboard the project about a widow who finds herself heading to Las Vegas with her granddaughter after a pile of money falls in her lap. Blythe Frank and Agathe David-Weill are producing the film; Michael Mailer is an executive producer.

Toronto-based Peace Arch Entertainment is repping presales of the project at the Marche du Film. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Connecticut and Nevada in August. CAA and Icm packaged the film.

The Icm-repped Walken most recently appeared in "Balls of Fury," "Hairspray" and "Man of the Year." He has Tony Vitale's comedy "Life's a Beach" forthcoming, and he's starring in Jonathan Hensleigh's "The Irishman," which Lightning Entertainment is selling at the Cannes market.

Irish gangsters are back in vogue in the movies (IrishCentral)

2 April 2010 10:55 AM, PDT | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Later this year, we will receive two more heaping platefuls of Irish gangsterism. In September, Martin Scorsese presents a new HBO mini-series called "Boardwalk Empire," about the creation of gambling mecca Atlantic City, featuring numerous Irish underworld characters. Also, "The Irishman" is expected to hit the big screen in late 2010. Starring Christopher Walken, the film explores the rise and fall of Cleveland killer Danny Greene, the Celtic-obsessed gangster who challenged Cleveland’s high-level Italian American mob. But if your appetite for Irish crime lords is such that your can’t wait, stroll over to St. Mark’s Place on the Lower East Side where the Museum of the American Gangster is about to open. Located in a former speak-easy, the museum is currently conducting preview tours. When renovations are completed in the coming weeks, viewers will be able to explore the entire facility, where it is said Frank Sinatra (no »

Kyra Sedgwick, Vincent D'Onofrio in 'Chlorine'

25 January 2010 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Kyra Sedgwick and Vincent D'Onofrio have signed on for "Chlorine," an indie dramedy from writer-director Jay Alaimo.

"Chlorine" revolves around a family struggling to maintain their well-to-do lifestyle in their overly materialistic New England community. Sedgwick plays the matriarch, who is more interested in appearances than for caring or showing affection toward her husband (D'Onofrio) and pushes him into a bad real estate deal.

Christopher Beatty, Gary Giudice and Alaimo are producing the pic, which begins filming this month in New Jersey. Michael Liberty executive produces.

Matt Fiorello and Peter Tannenbaum worked on the script with Alaimo.

Alaimo co-wrote and directed "Slingshot," starring Julianna Margulies. This isn't the first time he has tried to film "Chlorine"; a few years ago, the filmmaker assembled a cast that included Ray Liotta and Demi Moore, but the pic fell apart because of Hurricane Katrina and scheduling.

After "Chlorine," Sedgwick jumps back into production »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Eleven

13 January 2010 6:51 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.

If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:
